I did work on a site for Fox and that, against my recommendations, had no version control either. You might be surprised to learn that Fox farms out most, if not all, of their web work to other companies.
Myspace is written in ColdFusion, but you can tell that just by looking at the site.
These sites aren't made by professionals. Even if the coders are good, the management isnt.

No time to poke around and see if my changes might break something else. No staging server. No debugging. Direct modifications to the live servers.
That works fine if you are working on the site for a Quake clan, but for a high traffic, "professional" site with millions of users? Obviously not.

You need to consider what causes crime. Crime is caused by mental or severe economic problems, and often catalysed by a social factors (gangs).
In places where the mentally ill are properly treated, this is not a factor. Here in LA, the mentally ill wander free with little or no treatment.
Also here the bad economic situation of the inner cities is drastically contrasted by the situation in Bel Air. Combine this with movies, TV and music that glorify the life of a thug gangsta and a persons natural resistance to crime can be worn down over the span of only 10s of years.
Guns are just an effective tool for doing a job you have decided to do.

Vivid Video's opt-in "nice" spam list has only around 250,000 names on it. This list generates $2000-5000 a day. Mailing to this list takes 2 people a total of about an hour. If you were making that much money doing something that only took an hour a day and is legal why would you ever even consider stopping?
Oddly enough if your service is actually valuable, and not something that 100s of other sites are offering services for free people will pay for it.
Darksunonline.org is asking for donations and getting quite a few of them. Why? Because the product is actually pretty good. It's no wonder that all these joke sites that post little more than the latest AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs fad lose 100% of thier customers when they try to charge.
