Slightly dated but still extremely valuable is "Web Site Usability: A Designer's Guide" by User Interface Engineering (uie.com) -- headed by usability guru Jared Spool. The book is based on actual user tests, and there's lots of other valuable stuff on the web site. The company hosts (still?) an annual usability conference.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I helped on this book while I worked for User Interface Engineering.
Back in the days of paper checks, clerks at Sears used to stamp "COINS" on the back of the check before accepting it. They then circled the "appropriate" letter: C for Caucasian, O for Oriental, I for Indian, N for Negro or S for Spanish. Yikes! Clearly, no choice of PC for politically correct!
