  1. Remember Pointcast? on Virtual Newscaster · · Score: 2

Intelligent agents have been buzzwords for last ten years. In the final analysis, content will be king, or it will fall the way of PointCast.

  2. Best NT and best *nix hosts in sub$10/month range on On The Subject of Web Hosting · · Score: 2
Have been sampling hosts for 5 years now, and finding the best is always a long search. The sub $10 category is one that I know well.

If you want NT cheap, take M6 Technologies. www.m6.net Mediahouse site stats 5 are outstanding, a nice control panel to add/delete/config your emails, database at no cost, more megs and bandwidth than you'd ever use, cgi-bin is there and runs perl scripts well (something have had problems with NT hosts elsewhere). Speed is good, support good (though they don't work weekends). $10 setup, $10 a month. Superb.

If want *nix cheap, Hurricane Electric www.he.net is the best in town. PHP over mySQL database tossed in. $9.95 a month, $19.95 setup. Support pretty good, though their $9.95 is advertised as "self-serve", and this philosophy pretty well holds. Noticed they have started running adverts (the 'groovy' banners) on Slashdot also lately.

    All the best, Robert

  3. What really should be done on Reactions to AOL/Time-Warner Merger · · Score: 1
I'm sorry but the the AOL-Time-Warner deal, much as it is, is incomplete. What a mouthful of a name too, doesn't slide off the tongue at all.

The current course of action for AOL-Time-Warner is to merge with C|Net and Healtheon.

The resulting company Warner-AOL-Time-C|Net-Healtheon or "WATCH" really would have the right kinda feel for a big-brother media corporation.

  4. Tragedy. Hopefully will help show guilt for DOJ on Caldera and Microsoft Settle Lawsuit · · Score: 1

This is a tragedy. Yes, Caldera gets a few million, but Microsoft made many times more than this in burying DR-DOS and locking down the future. This kind of end hopefully won't happen in the DOJ case with the final result being, yes we unfairly buried Netscape and the rest using illegal FUD and anticompetitive practices. As compensation for our criminal activity, here is some chump change, now let us go back to selling our products now that we have killed the competition in the areas that we wanted to sell in.

  5. Support that ICANN moved quickly on ICANN Registers Improper Domain Names · · Score: 1
An interesting comparison is to the decision to revoke domain names that contained the salty sailor words. From what I can tell, some of those companies did put a big equity into building their brand name for a few years, then had their names pulled, even though they were following all rules at the time.

It's unfortunate for the owner of e-.com to lose his new domain. ICANN would have made his life worse though, if instead of acting now, they hummed and hahed for 3 years, then pulled it after he sunk a few hundred thousand in media buys and brand awareness.

Knew that the red capped software company was heading into an alliance to enhance their business strategy, but frankly Hell's Kitchen comes as a surprise. I was really wishing their merger was to a certain red-roofed leader in convenience dining...

  7. Re:Year-based naming on Software Version Numbering After 2000? · · Score: 1

retep has the correct reason behind Microsoft's marketing idea for naming after the years, so that users will feel their OS is ancient. They did not invent this strategy for naming, the looked that it has been successfully employed in the automotive industry for decades. Consider whether people would be more apt to upgrade their car if they could tell still others they were running a Buick 12.0.4 instead of a 1983 Skylark.
