  1. Re:who cares? on The Continuing War Against Microsoft's "Facts" Campaign · · Score: 1

Ok... so I'm no computer geek, but I've spent alot of time on them over the years (22 now so probably at least 12 with computers) trying to get shit to work, etc, and moreso I'm interested (I like knowing but don't have unlimited time to spend on everything I like knowing about) in how it all works. Always been windows, except for at gradeschool where we had iMacs. Anyway, so my buddy gave me a kubuntu version whatever live cd/install cd the other week, I messed around for it with a bit, and everything was just more confusing. Now I realize the role familiarity is playing here, but it wasn't just that. It was that if I was wondering how to do something, I would look it up and come across so much jargon and other stuff I didn't understand (because the advice/help assumed that I had some sort of previous knowledge) that looking it all up just wasn't worth it to switch. Now I also have a laptop with a messed up power input jack that I might get fixed and use to explore the world of linux so I never have to pay for an OS again, but at this point it just wasn't worth it for me to switch. So, what am I missing? What feature(s) (besides cost and idealism)does an open source OS allow someone like me that windows doesn't?

About India undercutting, Id say that there would definately be an international patent of some sort but it would make sense since any money generated would go back to the drug development program

What I wanted to find out is the annual consumer spending on drugs and compare that to your number of $10 billion So according to this drug companies made 35.9 billion dollars in 2002. Its not exactly the data I wanted but you can figure that money already supplied by the government(medicare, etc) and money "wasted" (would be unnecessary otherwise) on marketing will cancel each other out to some extent. The ultimate point was that people are privately spending tens of billions of dollars a year on patented medicines right now anyway, if we did away with patents and just funneled that into research (via taxes)it could be that everyone ends up paying less for their medicines.

So really patents aren't obviously necessary to the process of drug discovery.

Humans do have an innate immune system, and an adaptive immune system on top of it. Ours is actually "more evolved" really in that its more efficient (doesn't destroy tissue due to every little infection). The alligator approach is more of a brute force method in that their innate immune system is apparently more robust and they sit around most of the time so they can automatically devote more energy to healing than us constantly tapping our feet mammals can.

...what they actually found out) Abstract We are using mass spectrometry based proteomics to investigate immune related proteins of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). Alligators have an innate immune system, meaning that they require no specific exposure to an antigen to illicit an immune system response. Alligators were captured and blood was drawn from internal jugular vein. Adult alligators were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to activate their immune system. Serum was collected from the whole blood by homogenizing and centrifugation followed by salt removal using 20% trichloroacetic acid. Proteins expressed after exposure to LPS was separated using 2D-gel electrophoresis. The down-regulated proteins were isolated and digested for identification. Analysis was performed using nano-ESI-MS/MS on a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer and identified with MASCOT using MSDB and NCBInr database. When uninfected alligator serum was compared to LPS exposed serum the protein expression changed, indicating that the alligators produce significant innate immunological proteins when exposed to an infection.

So patents may or may not (depending on the what it is) encourage the creation of new ideas/ways of doing things and inhibit efficient implementation of those ideas. So don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, but there's got to be some way to tell the difference between a worthwhile baby and a non-worthwhile one. Or at least a better way than the current system uses. Really my point is that you missed the point about creation/development of novel ideas.
