I would recommend FreeNAS too. I have used it for the past 4 years and it has been very reliable and stable. I have an Intel P4 with 1.5GB RAMBUS. I had used for 4 years and was not willing to part with it. I turned it into a NAS solution with two gigabit ethernet cards and I have never had to look back.
I have seen openFiler mentioned down below and as one user pointed out 4 years back it required an external authentication mechanism. I have not had speed issue with freeNAS. To be honest I have never measured it but in all these years I have never had any kind of hiccups watching movies stored on this NAS.
