If they are planning on running on X Windows they are just as doomed as linux is on the desktop. I yanked my voodoo card back out of my linux box last night and put it back into my windows machine. At least I can now get a frame rate better than 2.5 per second. God I love linux but something needs to be done about the video performance. Linux is superior to any other operating system except for video? Someone fork the kernel now and add the graphics drivers to it so we can get some damn video speed. And while you are at it make it single user mode. Joe at home as well as myself could care less if AI can host 25 users. I want to squeeze maximum performance out of what I got not run a server.
You have to lay down the law. When you are working no one is to bother you. I hardly allow my wife to even talk to me when I am working. Fortunately I do not have any curtain climbers to distract me either. If I did they would be caged during the day. If distractions are a problem rent a little space somewhere that will eliminate that problem. I have been doing more and more telecommuting and it is just working out great for both myself and my customers. Corporate america needs to get it through their heads that a programmer does not need to be on site and it is actually very conterproductive. You would have to pay me four times as much as I make now to even think about working in SV, now does that make sense. Their is no real programmer shortage in Silicon Valley just a shortage of people willing to live there.
This is exactly what linux needs to push it to the desktop. I have been saying this all along. X is crap in a single user mode environment. If you wish to have fast graphics which is required by games you have to get at the hardware.
For the very reasons he stated GTK SUCKS. They tried to produce a class structure with a language that does not support classes. For this very reason GTK is both slow and non flexible. QT smokes GTK due to its great object design.
Community license my #$$!@ Well I hope the community learned a valuable lesson here. The underlying problem is the SCSL and nothing else. Under the SCSL, SUN is getting all of the development done for them and reaping all of the profits. I long ago jumped off of the java train. It is nothing but pure hype. The performance just plain sucks and cross platform with java is a total pipe dream. Go ahead an write code for SUN and INPRISE I am sure they will love you for it. Not to mention a month from now they are going to charge you for your own code. Suckers!
