You went about installing FreeBSD the long and hard way! All it take is only 2 floppies with images put onto them (kern.flp and mfsroot.flp). The floppies will boot the kernel then you have the option of installing off the CD's, FTP, or network. RTFM: FreeBSD Handbook Installation Guide and the FreeBSD Newbie install for screenshots with play-by-play instructions (screenshots are for 2.2.5, but they look the same for 4.0).
