What's wrong with stuff that works? Especially when it works? If it works, it's not broken is it? Can I talk to my little sister on MSN using Trillian? Can I talk to the guy I'm working on a webcomic with on ICQ using Trillian? Can I talk to my g/f and most of my friends on AIM using Trillian? With a smaller memory footprint than either Jabber or all three of those clients combined? Without mentioning your burning hatred for Microsoft and AOL, explain why using something that works is bad.
I was about to post the protocol, except the front part of the protocol states what you state and, of course, the lameness filter prevents it from being posted. GPLed fucking document, fuck slashdot.
I don't know what you mean about featureless chatrooms, you mean the lack of advertising? That's a bad thing?
Clients using TOC haven't had any problems. Clients using OSCAR are begging to be dicked.
Oh but it is, my friend, it is. You see, Jabber tried to use OSCAR, which AOL has said repeatedly is an internal to AOL protocol. Meanwhile Trillian uses TOC, which is the publicly documented protocol that AOL encourages everyone to use. You'll notice that Trillian, TiK, Net::AIM, and others never have a problem, because AOL is glad that they follow the rules and content to leave them alone.
We could all just start using (and supporting via registering) Trillian @ http://www.trillian.cc/, completely ignore this 'Jabber' crap, and get on with our lives.
Trillian crashes less, is faster, takes less memory, and just provides an all around level of service superior to Jabber. And, unlike Jabber, Trillian connects to AIM properly, so they don't get booted.
No, we're definitely playing the capitalist game here. Amazon is a capitalist entity that we want to defeat using capitalist methods. noamazon.com listed alternatives to amazon.com that we could frequent to drive it home to them. Unfortunately, it's a bit dated.
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22ogre+battle%22+% 22fan+art%22
That is a search for
"ogre battle" "fan art"
and you can see quite clearly that it treats fan and art to be two separate words to search for, not a phrase. And their emails tell me that this is by design. Roight.
the problem is "my home page" could match "my home page" or it could match "my dog peed on a newspaper page outside our home". Google definitely needs to take a hint from altavista in terms of precision searching, but it's nice that I don't have to append "-porn" to every one of my google queries.
Basically alot of the books on programming published by Prima are getting slammed for sucking. Andre LaMothe is supposed to be one of hte editors, so I have no idea how this is happening.
If you're not using gamedev.net or flipcode.com, you may want to give gameinstitute.com a try. It's mostly windows based and a bit pricey, but if there's enough Linux interest (email them, duh) then they'll probably add courses.
Basically Warcraft III will be released simultaneously for PC & Mac. Taht's a step up from previous efforts, which means there's at least one company is taking the Mac more seriously than previously, and I'm sure others will follow the example...
but this is how it is when you try to email Blizzard's tech support. Go ahead, think of a valid problem you're having with a Blizzard game, email support@blizzard.com and you'll get back an automated response that has nothing to do with your problem. Very frustrating.
They call me "Master Cat Herder" cause I managed to get myself and 15 friends to see the movie opening night. Suffice to say that almost everyone hated it. I don't know why, but I was completely floored.
The movie reminded me alot of Heinlein novels... You either love them or hate them, but either way they're an incredible read. And I've yet to find anyone with a middle view... People either said, "AWESOME!" or "WTF is this crap?". No one said, "eh".
People are getting mixed signals though: the GIA is reporting that Square has more films in the works, while at Square's shareholder meeting, the brass apologized profusely by the losses incurred primarily as a result of making the film. IF this was indeed only a test run THEN holy shit we ain't seen nothing yet.
Someone explain why this hasn't been moderated up more?
Slow down cowboy!

It's been 16 seconds since you hit 'reply'!
Fantastic, all that time playing The Typing of the Dead has apparently done more than break my wrists, it has now alienated me from slashdot. *sob*
concerning the PR aspect. Let's tell NASA to shut everything down for a year, put the money from their budget into a trust fund, then bring them back online, and then force the entire motherfucking population to go through engineering school. Once the stupid is beaten out of them, they'll be less likely to argue about nukyooler things being bad and more likely to support silly things like, I dunno, making sure people have a way off the planet in case everything shits the bed. Anyone? Agree/disagree?
Microsoft distributes a disassembler with the.NET SDK... So some hackers who aren't content to play with the bytecode get to play with MSIL as well... Can't hurt... But goddamn you have a nice analogy
I didn't want to be moderated up dammit, I just wanted an answer to my specific points. Pleeeeeeeease?
Let me clarify: I'm a Microsoftee, and I'm happy that.NET is gonna make my life a bit easier. The three things I listed are three things that I'm looking forward to. As a developer, that's why I'm gonna go with.NET. What are these BSD ports and how are they going to steal my attention away from the.NET Microsoft has so lovingly crafted just for me?
.NET is a programming environment. Everything I've read in MSDN and tried out in the Betas points to it making life easier for me to code stuff on Windows. I fail to see what this has to do width subscription based software.
Hello. Could one of you PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE explain to me what this is and how it goes against Microsoft's.NET? Thank you.
If you get a chance, could you explain:
-how does it make it easier for systems to communicate with each other? (soap stuff)
-how does this make it easier for people working in multiple langauges to integrate their stuff? (you know, people in vb inheriting classes from c++, people in delphi using source written in c#, etc)
-how does this make it easier to write ASP applications that don't care what browser you're using? (webforms)
Unless of course you meant that Kodak was the 800 pound gorilla waiting to be eaten by the 1500 pound tiger.NET? If Microsoft says "Lie on my dinner plate, NOW" what is Kodak supposed to do about it?

Brood War was also a Hybrid Release, I believe. I think when they mean simultaneously, this time they really do mean it (no one month difference).
