  1. Not significant - ignore on Study: Refactoring Doesn't Improve Code Quality · · Score: 5, Insightful

I wouldn't call that study publish worthy.

It certainly isn't statistically significant. 4,500 lines of C# code is nothing. I work with systems that have millions of lines of code. I've seen single class files that have thousands of lines of code (and vomited when I saw it). An important question here would be whether the volume of code in a system is a significant factor in the value of refactoring.

Based on their own statistics the refactoring was poorly done. Their result was more code, more complexity, and more coupling. Certainly not the work I would expect from an experienced software developer, but certainly something I would expect to see from undergraduate students who don't fully understand what they are doing.

I think the last sentence in the actual study sums it up pretty well - "Furthermore, it would be better that the same
experimental setup can be executed in industry environment with the industry experts and with
the industry level matured source code."

  2. Missing a few requirements on Project Envisions Modular Aircraft That Double as Train Cars · · Score: 1

The article focuses on the technical aspects: can it be done. Yes, I'm sure it can be done. But that wouldn't suddenly turn air travel into rail travel.

Think on the differences here for a bit. Air travel security is very tight because of the security risks. As much as some may call it security theater, there are real risks with getting that many people together on an airplane loaded with fuel which can go anywhere. This proposal does nothing to mitigate those security issues, so none of those security precautions common in airports would likely change.

  3. Security Compromised... on Private Networks For Public Safety · · Score: 1

"There should be easy practices for anyone to open up an otherwise-closed Wi-Fi access point if it's still connected to broadband and is near people in trouble"

That sounds like an open invitation for every hacker in the world to open up any Wi-Fi access point. How can you guarantee that such a capability wouldn't be abused?

  4. The conclusion is pure conjecture. There is no time dimension in their analysis. This shows that people who saw Facebook pictures of friends who voted are slightly more likely to admit that they also voted. To prove that the Facebook pictures actually influenced whether people voted the study would have to know the time people saw the Facebook message AND the time they voted to know whether the person voted before or after seeing the message. They couldn't have gotten that information from voting rolls.

Interpreting the results leaves no clear causal conclusions. It just opens the door for more studies to find more information.

  6. Re:Simply put on Will Tabbed Windows Be the Next Big Thing? · · Score: 1

Wait, so you are talking adding something so that I need to think about how I want to organize the applications I have open? How would that be improving my productivity? Things improve my productivity if they reduce or eliminate the amount of thought or effort I have to put into a task. I'm not sure I see how this would do that any better than the Winblows Taskbar.

  7. Anyone remember... on Computer DJ Uses Biofeedback to Mix · · Score: 2, Interesting

Macross Plus? The people at the Sharon Apple (virtuoid idol) concerts were fitted with bracelets that monitored everyone's vitals. The computer people modified the music and lighting to control everyone's mood. By the end of the movie Sharon Apple was able to sorta do mind control on people. This is what I wanna see next time I go to a concert!

  8. sure on Using GPL/BSD Code In Closed Source Projects? · · Score: 1
    From the GPL:

    2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

    a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.

    b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.

    What does this mean?

    1. You have to provide some indication (README) that the work has been modified. It is also a good idea to refer credit back to the original authors.
    2. Anything you make that contains this code must be GPLed. You can make it a separate product (ie library) and GPL those changes and modified API. You are then free to link that library into a closed application (dynamic shared, not static).

And that is the extent of the GPL. Any questions?

  9. Macross Plus on Microprocessors With Living Brain Tissue · · Score: 1

Ok, the first thing that pops into my head is the movie Macross Plus. They had banned the use of these types of chips for a very good reason, which you see first hand when two computers equipped with these chips go CRAZY. Which begs the question, could these chips also suffer from various psychological disorders which stem from chemical inbalance?

What about alzheimers disease? Wouldn't these brains get old, break down, and start forgetting what it was that you asked them to do?

  11. Coward as a Comic on Jakob Nielsen Answers Usability Questions · · Score: 1

I really hope this person isn't being serious. "Slashdot's use of liberal links" refers to the amount of links, not any kind of political/philosophical relation.

As for what Nielsen actually said, I find his ideas about using attributes and content to organize things interesting. I don't think the hierarchical directory structure will go away, but this may be a new way of utilizing directories. A UI could hide the reality of the directory structure behind the attribute/content/frequency of use structure.
