Is it really big brother? Most Americans have never considered leaving the country; I reckon the majority wouldn't even know how to apply for a passport. Maybe Big Brother indoctrinated them at a very early age, or maybe they're just comfortable where they are.

How many jobs would be lost? None! We're talking about skilled engineers. If they weren't wasting their time building space-toys, they'd be doing something useful for their (the State's) money. As to higher dreams, there are plenty of cheaper dreams that are higher still than space exploration at a time when we do not know if we can afford the cost in natural resources.
"Only in America". That's one of the dumb things people say that gets my goat big time. It is almost never true, and in this particular case, it is clearly false, because if you scan up, you'll see that an Australian student reports a similar thing happening in his own college.

Try this: struct Banana { Banana operator ++ (int) { Banana b; return b; } }; void main() { Banana C; C++; Banana D = (C++)++; }

Sure it will be out of water etc., if we persist in such stupid, wasteful behavior as sending people into space.
