Either that, or he was just using rhetoric. A hyperbole meant to imply that if you disagree with him you are saying that software development is a charity, which of course sounds outrageous. In any case it helps cover up the fact that he doesn't actually have a real argument.
What makes me sad when I think about this is how often I see this kind of tactic. A thought provoking rational argument is becoming increasingly hard to find.
