DST was created by Ben Franklin to aid farmers. It was never originally intended to save energy.
I will agree with most that it seems unneccessary these days. But having lived in the midwest, I have a lot of farmer friends and it does provide them with more usable hours to get the work done.
As farming technology gets more advanced, we'll likely see the need drop even more.
