  4. Cocaine is still part of the recipe on Is "coke.ch" A Violation of Coca-Cola's (tm)? · · Score: 1

Cocaine was part of the recipe until it was made illegal.

Actually that's not entirely accurate, you see when cocaine was made illegal Coca-Cola persuaded the government that the taste of cocaine was vital for its product, so a company called (iirc) StephenCo (no relation) was created under the jurisdiction of the government. This company is the only company in the United States that can legally import cocaine. The cocaine is imported in leaf form, the leafs are processed to remove the addictive properties (which are sold to the medical and research community) and then sold to Coca-cola for that oh so essential cocaine leaf flavor.

Actually I thought he was more of a nod to Thresh, winner of that quake contest for one of Carmack's rides. He was/is simply in a different league than almost any other FPS player. Quite awesome. Check out his page. He even looks like the guy from the episode.

  7. Hmm.... on Try to Name the SuSE Mascot · · Score: 2

Interestingly, chameleon is derived from the greek word khamaileon, literally meaning "ground lion," which could mean that SuSE is (ground) lion country. Lion country is a term for some unknown and unexplored area (dark continent, terra incognita, etc) which could directly refer to Linux as it is just that to many people. They hear Linux spoken of as this wondrous yet seemingly far off thing that is at the same time fasinating and frightening. A lion dance is a traditional Chinese ritual preformed to bring good luck, clearly a referal to the installation of Linux. So many levels, that little lizard must be the coolest logo ever!

Oh yeah, this is about name for the lizard...um...Lennard. Yeah.

Look Thomas Edison, or the famed Bell Labs. These are not cruel, heartless researchers, but rather geniuses, wishing to advance science, who would like to feed their families at the end of the day.

Sure, just ask Nikola Tesla (in reference to Edison of course).

  11. Genetic Purity must NOT happen on Short History of the 21st Century · · Score: 1

Using genetic manipulation to control the variation in the gene pool of any species is an action doomed to have horrible repercussions.

Katz's prediction seems to be working off the popular, but incorrect, model that evolution is something that continually strives toward greater and greater perfection. In actuality evolution is nothing more than a response to change, no species is "more evolved" than another, it just has met different needs for survival.

Evolution also cannot create new genes except in the case of mutation but that is very unreliable. Instead it must rely on the genetic variation within a species to meet its requirements. This can be shown in human bipedalism, our backbone is still designed to be supported at both ends as it would be in an animal that walks on all fours. It has modified to have a curve that allows us to balance ourselves, but it also creates a strong dispostion for lower back problems.

If we artifically limit the variation in our species we become specialized, and as we have seen time and time again, overspecialization (biological or cultural) is a one way ticket to eventual extinction.

The American Indians in the western US depended on the buffalo for almost every aspect of their culture, while this formed a strong and stable lifestyle that existed in harmony with the world it also allowed a deadly weakness to filter in. The early pioneers recognized this weakness and sadly exploited it to a terrible extreme, slaughtering hundreds of thousands of buffalo simply to deprive the Indians of that resource.

A more close to home example for many people would be AIDS. Certain people seem to be completely immune to this disease, we know a little of how they are immune but almost nothing of why. If we were to try and select which genes we wanted and which we didn't (as the Eugenics programs established in the early half of this century tried to do) we might unwittingly destroy a gene that protects us, or will protect us, from a currently unknown disease.

  12. Re:Too small to be useful? on Mainstream Books for Palm Pilots · · Score: 1

Actually I have found curling up in bed while reading on a palm to be more enjoyable than with a book. With a book it was always uncomfortable because I like to read lying down on my side and holding open a book with one hand isn't fun. With the palm I just set tealdoc on to autoscroll or just click down thru the pages. Even for my eyes the screen is easy to read for extended periods of time. But maybe it's just because I've looked at computer monitors my entire life. :-)

  13. Sounds like 60 cycle hum on Another Transmeta Patent · · Score: 3

About that stereo problem you mentioned, it sounds like the common effect known as the 60 cycle hum. The US electrical system runs on a 60 Hertz cycle (iirc) and that cycle is sometimes picked up by stereo equipment and broadcast thru the speakers. Theatres usually have a problem with this. The easiest solution for you would be to make sure that your stereo is grounded by using a good surge protector. Most surge protectors now come with a grounded indicator light that should help you debug this problem and they are a good idea for any major electrical equipment you'd like to have around for a while. :-)
