  1. MP# Butcher (Re:mpg toolbox) on Splitting Mp3's · · Score: 1

there's a windows program called "mp3 butcher" that is full-on gui oriented; works well, it's free. i use it over Samba to slice up 75meg live recordings to fit on my Rio....

  2. Re:some (hopefully) constructive criticism on Freshmeat II · · Score: 1

Hey moderator person, why does this only deserve a '1'? Hulloo?

Anyway, since Freshmeat's 'new' commenting system totally screwed up my response and crashed netscape to this very same post, I repost the gist of it here:

On #2, I can't but agree enough -- I run a basic 1024 display (laptop), and the browser takes up 2/3 of the screen. That blue bar down the side kills my available realestate and should be removed to at least make the site usable again.

  3. Perfect Business Opportunity on 4C May Back Down On Hard-Disk Copy Protection · · Score: 4

Wouldn't be a good move for some hard drive company to specialize in selling "non" copy protected hard disks, then? Sure, it'd be tough going up against the big guys, but you might create yourself a niche market...

  4. Trager bags are sweet on Laptop Back Packs? · · Score: 1

Go on over to Ebags and looks for Trager brand bags; they make about 4 styles, all of which are good. My most recent purchase is the "Rover" - this thing has great pocket design and is made of some hardcore bulletproof nylon stuff. I carry a Dell i7.5k (15.4" screen), Palm, tons of cables, phone, etc and feel comfortable. It uses good metal connectors, so you don't get that squeaky sound when you move like the plastic crap makes. My favourite feature are the front two pockets I call "jump" pockets -- the zipper top to bottom on the side, one on each end. Makes the perfect Palm/Cell carrying spot - easy access in a flash. -te

  5. Communicator can (sorta) on Cross Platform Email Client? · · Score: 2

Communicator mail format is a standard unixspool file; you can transparently use the files from both Windows and Linux - caveat, I don't think the indexes are, though.

I used to keep my mail shared and do this before I finally kicked the Windows habit alltogether. :)

  6. Ah, but it's *my choice* on Salon on the Red Hat IPO Eligibility · · Score: 1

I think one thing that may elude nay-sayers is that this is my choice. I, as some others most likely, have enough financial capital to spend on a venture like this without taking any hit in the pocketbook. Shelling out $2000 to open an ETrade account doesn't hurt at all.

But I was refused, simply because I'm not a trader or whatever is required. Ummm, but see, I wanted to invest this money in Red Hat because I spend a majority of my *life* working with The Product, supporting The Product, and helping The Product.

Sure, I want to make some cash, but it's not that important -- my personal intent was to just hold onto the stock and let it sit for a long time, kinda like applying my money in the same way I apply my time. I spend far more time working on Red Hat stuff than a mere $2000 can cover, as I'm sure most people do -- it's all about investing in something you believe in, kinda they way you invest in the code.

So, it sure would be nice if they had just said "You know, sir, that you don't meet the standard profile for investing. Are you sure about this, you could loose all your money." And my response? "Sure, I know. But if I loose my money, it's my fault. And I can always get more money -- Red Hat is only going on the IPO block once in my lifetime."

Money is easy to come by in life. Belief isn't.

  7. Not flamebait: KDE 1.1.1 and RH6 are stable on Red Hat Growing Pains · · Score: 2

Last Sunday I had the unfortunate need to do an emergency upgrade. Meaning, old faithful (my harddrive) took a big dive. I ran to the local store and snatched up another, slapped it in, and installed RH6.

Now, I'm a KDE user. As such, I knew that RH somehow took the stock KDE distro and "tweaked" it to point to directories they thought they liked. So, I chose not to install their KDE 1.1, but left all else the same. I then installed all the kde 1.1.1 RPMs from ftp.kde.org.

My system has been extremely stable, no problems at all. Everything is working, everything is nice. No compatibility problems to be found yet (this is a new machine as far as parts go).

Just wanted to voice - it's not all bad out there, some of us acutally have good luck and no problems. :)
