I'm not sure if Eclipse has gotten better or it's because I've given up on attempting to use too many plugins but I do know Eclipse used to have some really awful default settings which means it would come to a crawl if you start adding in some big plugins. In fact I think it used to use just the default memory settings for Java which I believe means it only had 64 megs to play with.
You had to fix it by other modifying the ini file or startup command on your icon. While that may seem fairly minor I thought I didn't have to do that with Netbeans so I stuck with Netbeans.
IntelliJ is the best all around for options performance, etc but I can't quite bring myself to pay £192 for it and my only open source Java project has only ever had one half assed release. I can't bring myself to give up Python for a bit to give it some care and therefore get a IntelliJ open source licence.
The thing is I think if you use a variety of languages and operating systems then you're stuck with a Java IDE because it appears that's the only cross-platform language people want to use for IDEs.
I use vim for perl, python, php and learning C. PyCharm (intelliJ based) for larger Python projects. I'm not sure I want to use vim for Java. I think I'll make more work for myself than what's worth it as I'm certainly no vim guru.
My guess is you use Windows and have anti virus software.
My desktop machine has 1/3 the ram (1gig) of my work machine and the processor is almost half the speed and yet Netbeans and Eclipse run better. The only difference is my dekstop at home runs Ubuntu and my work machine is XP with McAfee loaded on there as well.
In a way dropping out is worse than not going for a degree at all and sure if they're more or less the same then you wouldn't pick the guy that bailed out of university.
Of course if I had dropped out of university I wouldn't even have mentioned I went and sell myself on experience gained while having not gone to university.
3 months out of school isn't bad at all and if they have any money from the ordeal then what's the problem? Also having now been part of the whole start-up process it will should be easier to keep at it and then why go back to school when you can keep working for start-ups?
I believe some people need university to full get it. Some people don't. People who look down on those without degrees or those with degrees are just ignorant.
I don't think I would want to work for some old-school company that required a degree. Everything about it would imply everything they do is old and I'm probably not going to have as much fun.
Likewise I couldn't stand to work with someone who sees his company as bleeding edge and spends his time trying to as non-traditional as possible and dismissing people purely because they've gone to university and lack a butt load of experience.
It would just be nice to work with people who have common sense.
It's considered a staple of decent journalism to give at least a few words of explanation of what you're talking about for the convenience of readers who aren't already familiar with the subject.
I agree but Slashdot hasn't ever had decent journalism before. Why are you expecting it now?;-)
From what I can tell adrive isn't anything like dropbox. It's ad supported for the free account and their client is an Adobe AIR application that only runs on Windows, Mac and Linux where as Dropbox runs on those, Android, iPhone/iPad and blackberry. It has an API to integrate it into your site / application and there are no ads at all.
If I weren't going to use dropbox I'd personally go back to http://www.rsync.net/ because their support is awesome, it's cheap and while it has no free option it sounds like an all around better deal than adrive
It's on Linux as well. I wouldn't normally mentioned that but it appears all the old people around here today are confused and can't look up any information on their own so we should spell everything out for them.
Then you could look at their features page or look at the dropbox entry on wikipedia. Don't expect everyone to wipe your ass for you especially now when it's dead easy to highlight any word and search for it if you're using a decent modern browser.
UT3 is bargin bin material because it sucked. You can't expect to sell it full price on a smaller platform and make money when it's just easier to buy the bargin bin Windows version if you really want to play the awful game.
So is Epic and a lot of companies also use their engine so for most devs their work is done. Likewise for anyone that wants to use rage. Not that it matters, anyone developing their own engine should have competent developers and it shouldn't be an issue. If need be just support one or two of the top Linux distros and either it may or may not work for the others. I'm sure the community will get around any issues with less popular distros themselves.
Who' to say the World of Goo engine couldn't do a larger game? I would imagine the hardest part isn't how much content but speaking to the video / audio cards, cpu and memory and if that's all taken care of then the rest is probably fairly standard.
That said Id has also port their games to Linux with what seems to be relative ease. Even Epic has port most of their games to Linux. UT3 probably won't come to Linux since it sucked but the UT3 engine may very work on Linux already. So there have always been engines that companies could have used to develop on to allow them to port to Linux.
I thought that too but I really hope they don't. I plan on playing Goldeneye Source and buying the Wii version. I think they should embrace this. I just hope they have the sense to do so.
I'm sure he didn't mean that to read the way it does and I'm sure that can be said about most people. Internet dating profiles almost always sound creepy / awkward / weird.
Why is it small developers like those who made World of Goo and Braid can port their games to all platforms but it's nearly impossible for big companies?
I'm sure it's not as easy as Windows but it's lazy developers and profit hungry publishers that stop games from showing up on Linux and nothing else.
That would have been expensive, had horrible battery life and possibly be too delicate. It would never had happened and won't be viable (imo of course) for a few years at the least.
People like sharing. They could set up their own site and have better control but that's just not going to happen and they will be happy to sell their privacy for someone to do the leg work and give them a platform to reach the whole world. It's not good and they'll cry when it comes back to bite them in the ass but for now they're happy.
It cost money to maintain and stopped no one. There is no point to it.

I remember making that mistake and thinking Bill Clinton was pretty awesome for having such an excellent.

If you're under 20 you'll definitely be naive enough to allow them to treat you like shit.

My experience says that's not true. So where's your proof to any of that or are you just talking shit?
Not sure what version mine is but it just asked me to update dropbox on my ubuntu machine the other day.

Old people and the internet. It's always good for a laugh.
Must be your first day on the internet so here you go: http://www.dropbox.com/features
