I'm sure you can find some equally brain-dead sections of US legal code, but the only thing even close to this in intent would be direct threats against the life of the president.

Being from outside the US I've always found it interesting that the position of the president is held in such regard. In a sense you argued against yourself by in this last statement. Why should the penalties for conspiring to murder the president be any different than conspiring to murder your neighbour. I agree the president's job is likely more important than your neighbours, unless your neighbour is about to find a cure for cancer, but is the president's life any more important?

The fact that the president is idolized is not that different than what the Chinese do with respect to the State. I've always found it interesting that I've never heard anyone argue about the view of american president's.

Any attempt by any company to introduce new technologies that are based on standards and that provide a means to work well with any and every platform should be considered a plus for the industry. We must get past the platform specific train of thought and focus on systems that make the platform you choose simply a personal choice and not one that will limit your ability to be productive.

IPP is the way of the future. It provides a mechanism to connect any and every printer in the world together with any delivery mechanism. The possibilities of providing a common printing mechanism are astounding. Imagine doing away with low quality fax machines and being able to send a secure and private document around the world directly to someone's desk. Imagine sending a birthday card to Grandma right to her living room. Imagine printing from a wireless device while walking down the street to a printer at a print shop ready to pick up!

Forget snail mail and faxing IPP is the only way to go!

  3. Privacy Concern on Announcing Slashdot Subscriptions · · Score: 1

I'd like to first point out the irony in having read so many posts on /. regarding the imminent failure of other institutions that have been forced to implement some sort of money collection and now reading this announcement. I understand the reasons but it goes against the idealogy behind the /. movement.

Also, when you become a member of /. you freely give away some of your personel information. Even though most of it is optional it's kind of nice feeling comfortable having it out there in a forum that to this point has never profitted from this information. What will happens in phase 2 of the subscription plan when the advertisers ask for this user information and a list of preferred information gathered from linking to other pages. The door is being opened and often once it's opened it's hard to close it again.

Why does it feel like a funeral?

  4. Re:Quit beating the dead horse on OS X As "This Generation's Sgt. Pepper" · · Score: 2

The issue is not that most people do not have Macs. This issue is that OS X is taking proven technologies founf in 'NIXs and incorporating them into a mainstream and easy to use interface. Even everyone does not have OS X on their machine, the techniques used to bring it to life will be used for years to bring other great technologies (see Linux) into more houses and to make people see that Windows really is antiquated.

A great book to read that takes a futuristic look at the Internet and VR and expanding computer power is Otherland. A great read that I would suggest to anyone interested in this style.
