The alternative is coal. And coal mining is a far greater disaster than uranium mining, not to mention the pollutants that it releases when burned.
Neither wind nor solar can provide a base generation level. Solar is still expensive there are problems with centralized solar. Wind is fine, but ugly and mechanically unreliable. Drive by a western wind farm and count how many generators are off line becuase they're down for maintenance!
