Wikipedia is perhaps the best know internet phenomenon in terms of collective editing. The truth is out there, but Wikipedia only mirrors what has been published in what it deems as respected journals or books. Respected publications get it wrong all the time but Wikipedia has a caveat of Verifiability - Original Research/Truthiness is bad, but if X is a respectable publication then it can be cited, if the claim is rebutted in another respectable publication all is good and that should be dealt with as a controversial statement.
Situations like this are actually quite rare on Wikipedia . Just be Bold - delete it if it untrue or your truthiness is better.
