Not sure if there is much one can do about a stolen computer, I would not want to come face to face with the criminal due to the fact they must be pretty desperate to steal it in the first place.
My solution is to use an online backup service. I use Carbonite which gives unlimited backup for $50/year. Fortunately I haven't had to "use" the service yet but if my laptop does get stolen I have the next best thing to getting it back, I will have my data...
