  1. AOL Instant Messanger Blockage on AOL Shuts Down 3rd Party IM Software? · · Score: 5

Hello, All. Rob Flynn here, Gaim Maintainer and leader devleoper. We have, on some occasions, experienced this as well. It only happens, however, when using our experimental oscar support. Our Oscar support is based on a package called libfaim. This is a somewhat reverse engineered library that allows anyone to use the OSCAR server. AOL has recently started blocking libfaim. Note: They are not blocking the clients theselves it appears to only be this library. I spoke with several people at AOL and learned that the TOC servers would not be affected. (I guess we can still expect the occasional TOC-Burp that we all experience from time to time). If anyone has any questions on this matter, please feel free to let me know. Thanks and Take Care, Rob PS: Gaim 0.10.0 was released this morn' :-)

I can't really see how something of this nature would even be allowed. How can they complain about napster/etc while backing things like this? If I were a PhD and found my thesis for sale on this site, I would be ripped. Take care, Peace, and happy hacking Rob

  8. Re:Don't need a legal basis on What's Apple's Legal Basis For Blocking Cube Previews? · · Score: 1

That reminds me of a situation that I had to deal with about a year ago as a Gaim developer. Our old logo was of tux, with the AOL running man hugging him and an AOL logo kind of faded in behind them. We thought that it'd show the "AOL/Linux" thing pretty well. Anyways, after the whole Microsoft/AOL battle happened AOL had their lawyers send us a letter asking us to remove their logo from ours. Of course, they had every right to do this since we didn't get their explicit permission to use their images. This, still, is an example of a larger company using their layers to make a smaller party conform. We removed it immediately and left a nice little hole in our logo for a couple releases with a "Removed by Request" in place of the yellow man and the AOL symbol. Peace, all, and happy hacking.

I've been noticing that out here in SoCal (perhaps this is everywhere) that when some shows air they have a "True HDTV" message or something similar to that at the bottle of the screen during the intro. I'm assuming some stations are starting to multicast and send both signals. This could ease the switch to HDTV.

  13. Wireless, Bands, and Interference on How Many Frequency Bands Are There? · · Score: 1

I was involved with starting a Wireless Internet Provider in a North Carolina Town. We provide 11mb Wireless Access to our customers. The Lucent WaveLan cards that we used to get everything going make use of the 2gig range. 2.4gig to be exact. We experienced very few problems with this setup (except for the line of site limitation). We did, however, get interference from an 800mhz Pager Tower. This being a third harmonic situation, the best we could hope to do was place some filters on the tower. That, or look for another location :-). For anyone that doesn't quite understand the 3rd Harmonic thing, let me know. A quick explaination is: 800mhz x 3 = 2,400mhz (2.4gig). Take care and Happy Giggin'

Heya. There's also been plenty of work out there in backwards engineering the oscar client -- we won't go into that here, though. heh. Anyways, You're correct on the TOC server being a "scaled down" version of OSCAR. Currently TOC does not support: Talk, Direct Connections (Images/etc), sending files, and buddy icons. In the TOC Protocol spec there are places set up for rvous_propose which would allow you to send propose requests. With this implemented sending/receiving files, talks, etc should be trivial. We'd just need to be told what protocol to use once the clientClient talks have been initiated. If not, I'm sure we could hack them up ourselves. The only other thing lying around other than that would be buddy icons. Either way, this can be a Good Thing(tm). Cheers and Happy /.'ing
