  1. Re:This is a rare breed of human. on Anti-GMO Activist Recants · · Score: 1

You relate ppl dying of hunger to anti-gmo how exactly? Oh wait.. you actually believe it when a company like monsanto tells you they are doing it to solve world hunger? Right.. World hunger can end right now, without the need for gmo's. The fact is that disregarding the hazzards of gmo's, the whole setup is wrong in so many ways. Once a farmer is in it, he basically cannot opt out. Not only that, but the pollen of those gmo plants spreads through the air and infects other farmers fields. After a while, a monsanto rep shows up and tells the farmer he has gmo plants on his fields and is violating their IP, so he either can buy in or get sued. Yes, this sounds exactly like an altruistic company trying to eliminate world hunger.

dos line endings, very good point. since it is very likely he will run into it, i just want to add 'cat -e file'. unix line ending will show like: string$ whereas dos line endings would probably look like: string^M$ you can use dos2unix, or checkout how tr and sed can do it, with the latter you have added benefit of making acquintance with some standard and often used nix tools.

Maybe we pay all those taxes for one of the best social security systems in the world? If you lose your job, the government gives you money.. not altogether that much, but at least just enough to survive. Rather not pay a lot of taxes? Think at the downside of that... no good medical assurances.. no serious unemployment money.. Put like this, I actually prefer to pay taxes, I like to share what I have with those less fortunate.

I don't know where you live, but here in Belgium you don't see alot of those cctv systems, except sometimes on the metro's. I for one do not feel constantly observed (and I'm not). Here at least if someone wants to tap my phone, they have to go ask a judge. AND they need proof that you're breaking a law, or serious supspicions you are doing so. Our civil rights are still protected... for as long as that lasts :p

first: I was not aware that the first crusades were actually defensive in nature. All I was trying to make clear is this: every religion can be (mis)used to gain power. Islam as well as Christianity. Which in my eyes history has proven well. IMHO, religion as such is a good thing. If you choose to believe, fine by me. It's only when some potentate uses the religion to his own ends that things go wrong.

the inquisition is just a part of the machine the catholic church used to be. they took care of internal problems. but the catholic church also waged wars. how many died during the crusades? i bet ya it will be just a little more than what the inquisition did. just my 2 cents ;-)
