  1. Re:Pictures!! on Introducing The New Slashdot Setup · · Score: 1

Its a security thing, companies pay big money to remain anonymous... I guess the way Exodus sees it is that information about server layout, type location is confidential.
Exodus is really uptight about letting people into the building. I just worked for a company doing a buildout at exodus. I was out with a freind when I got an emergency page. Some server was down or something. I was close to the colo so I swung by.
When I got to Exodus with my friend, she really needed to go to the bathroom. So I asked a security guard if she could use the facilities, which are located outside the main colo space (which requires a palm scan to enter). The security guard informed me that to use the bathroom would require the following:

They must hold on to her ID.
    She must Sign in.
She must be issued a badge (a long procedure).
And a Security guard would have to be present at all times, waiting outside the stall.

That should give you an idea of how concerned Exodus is with security.

  2. Intel is in serious trouble on i820 Chipset Under Recall · · Score: 1

IMHO, I don't think that in its current incarnation INTEL can seriously compete. Like any bloated company that became do big, bloated and powerful, they are destined to fall.
The industry seems to follow patterns.

Genious kid or group of individuals has/have great idea
    Small company make millions
Suddenly large company hires high price managment
    Original people leave
New managment comes up with bogus strategies
Some new individual comes along with better idea
    repeat from top.

It happened before (think Microsoft, Sybase) It will happen again (maybe linux if open source gets killed by companies that release closed products so attractive to management types that they can't refuse them and then become dependant on them)

I know, this is all off-topic and probably redundant but I felt like saying it

  4. BASIC stamps are actullly pretty neat on Build Your Own Robot For About $89 · · Score: 2

As seniors at college we had to complete a group "Design Project" as a graduation requirement. We decided to try and make an device that would activly tune a guitar using small motors. I wanted to spec out a "fashionable" processor, such as something based on the 68000, and the thought of using an $80 Basic stamp purchased out of a jameco catalog irked me. But the darn thing did the job. I know, what's the point. I just felt like posting something for once.

  5. Re:Multitasking on CmdrTaco's Week with Tivo · · Score: 1

You would need two seperate tuners to accomplish this, so yes, it is a hardware limitation. Seeing that PIP TV with dual tuners used to be like $100 more last time I was TV shopping, I can deal with Tivo not being able to multitask...

If you look in the System Information section on your tivo's on screen menus, there is a "Dial-in Configuration code: 000" key. I think the Dial in stuff is there just not turned on. To bad it's not open source.

I really think the whole "recent study proves...." thing has gotten WAY outta hand. What's next? Drving while drunk is acutally safer?

I mean I bet if someone cross referenced results from past studies it would be possilbe to arrive at any desired proof. ie:
    Sleep Depravation makes you smarter.
    Eating Spinach makes you smarter
Therfore Sleep Depravation make you eat Spinach.

    I am sorry.
