But that isn't the point. This is about "Free" as in speech. That means that you're allowed to make changes to the software and re-distribute it (under the restrictions of the various licenses).
*sigh* I remember the old trolls back in the day. These new trolls can't hold a candle to them. Have fun, little trollkin.
Couldn't you say the same thing about word processors in general? Nobody *needs* a word processor. People just need to learn how to write correctly and legibly.
Nope. It's speed. I can type far Far FAR
FAR faster than I can write. I use a word processor and grammar checker because it makes my life easier. That's what computers are supposed to do.
That's one opinion. If by "easier" you mean "get the boring work done faster".
Personally, I hate the grammar checking functionality in MSOffice. It isn't setup to understand the technical papers I write. So, in most cases OpenOffice.org is a better tool for me.
Not to mention the idiotic idea of storing MSOffice files in binary format so that a few times a month I have to pull a copy off of the back up tape because something happened and no one can open it in MSOffice anymore. What was that about "makes my life easier"?
This is why I eventually let my linux partition deteriorate and die.
It's software. How does it "deteriorate and die"?
For a while it was fun, but I found myself falling behind on the maintenance. With all the other stuff I have going on, I simply don't have the time or effort to significantly investigate the workings of the OS, not to mention make it work like I want it to.
apt-get update apt-get upgrade
Compare that to: WindowsUpdate Anti-virus update SpyWare update Defrag
The problem, I think, is that open source software wants to have its cake and eat it too. It often goes for raw functionality without usability, with the mentality of "if I can figure it out, so can you!" This is fine, if you want "open-source-types" to use your software, but you really can't complain if Joe User doesn't want to do a significant amount of research before setting up a computer.
Yet Firefox is gaining marketshare and google seems to be popular, also. Thunderbird is also doing okay.
It's like... blah blah blah... blame.
Again, usage of Open Source apps and Linux is increasing.
Increasing == more people using it.
More people using it == more popular.
If it doesn't work for you, that's fine. But the numbers show that it is working for an ever increasing number of other people.
I see you're trolling, but I'll answer this one anyway to keep down the other trolls.
What do all us "nerds" do with our time??? I got bills to pay? Anyone else???
Most of the programmers are not employed by ISV's to write shrinkwrapped software. They're paid by companies who sell non-software services to support and enhance their software systems.
So even if all software was free (as in beer), the impact on most programmers would be minimal (they suddenly get their tools for free).
But that isn't the point. This is about "Free" as in speech. That means that you're allowed to make changes to the software and re-distribute it (under the restrictions of the various licenses).
#1. Mandate that all official documents be in an open format (.pdf for example).
#2. Mandate that all software used be able to save in that format, 100%, by default. (None of those bogus warnings from MSWord about saving in a different format and maybe losing your changes.)
#3. Let the various ISV's compete on price / functionality / service for your governmental contracts while you rake in the savings.
It's amazing that because of your bias, you can assume I misread the post.
No. I assume you "misread" my post because you were unable to reply to intelligently. Either you "misread" it or you are an "idiot". You're choice.
No, that is NOT propaganda"
Hmm, that's funny. It seems that of the 10 people I asked, 10 disagreed. I work in a SCHOOL, where Bush is directly next to satan in the heirarchy, but they ALL agreed with me.
Hmmm, so instead of looking up the DEFINITION of "propaganda" and showing how your usage fits, you ASK PEOPLE WHAT THEY THINK? And you claim to work at a school.
Maybe you are an idiot.
Is it just possible that maybe YOU fucked up? MAYBE you're wrong. Everyone I talk to seems to think so.
Again, who gives a shit what the people that YOU talk to think? Focus on the definitions.
Or do the definitions contradict your point? Yes? They do? Well then you're wrong and the people you talked to are wrong.
Then accept it when they tell you you're being an ass, that you can't get the main idea of a post, and that you are a liar.
Then apologize.
You're the one who thinks that claiming that 10 anonymous people at some annoymous "school" say something has any meaning here.
Post the references that support your statement. It should be easy to find them since you work at a school.
Oh, you're the janitor at one of those "schools" for kids with "special needs", aren't you?
Why yes, I certainly see how the opinion of a janitor would be ranked higher than the regular definition of what "propaganda" is.
Here's a free clue, claiming that other, annonymous, people agree with you is NOT furthering your case. It is only showing how idiotic and un-informed you are for believing that it does.
And "liar" has to do with telling "lies". Not with "you can't get the main idea of a post, and that you are a liar". Find where I told a lie and link to it.
Otherwise, "liar" will be added to the list of words you do not understand (along with "propaganda" and "fascist").
So you're an idiot. Be happy. You've found a slot in life as the janitor of a "school" for kids with "special" needs. At least there you can pretend that you're smart.
If you have power at the state level, but not the federal level, you push State's Rights.
If you have power at the federal level, but not the state level, you push Federalism.
If you have neither, you talk about the corruption at those levels.
The Power is then used to push your ideological agenda (which may or may not be 100% coincident with your Party's agenda).
What is "bad" when "they" do it is "good" when "we" do it. No matter what "it" is. It's all about Power. How to get it, how to keep it and how to use it.
As he pointed out, a Fascist government CAN be democratically elected.
Now it is time for YOU to show that YOU understand the terms YOU like to toss around.
#1. WHAT are the characteristics of a "Fascist" government. (No stupid examples such as "the Nazis were Fascist". State the specific characteristics that defined them as "Fascist".)
#2. HOW does it differ from other forms of government?
I'm going to bet that you can't do those. I'm going to say that because you've used those terms incorrectly so many times in the past.
He implied that the Bush supporters spouting their "Bush bashing" lingo were fascist.
There's a huge difference there. Learn to read.
That's propaganda. By using the very tool that he derides, he engages in hypocrisy.
No, that is NOT propaganda. That is his opinion.
Since you've made it clear to us all now how to read a post, why don't you try it. Seing as how, you know, you didn't.
The thread flows thusly:
daveschroeder - initial post in this thread sahrss TheFlyingGoat Doc Ruby ifwm - your post
The response about Bush was based on his PREVIOUS posts. Is it all that difficult to believe I've read his posts before?
I believe the phrase is "GET OVER IT".
So you're response to his current post may have NOTHING to do with that post? What kind of idiot are you?
Why be an asshole man? I wasn't. It's not that hard to be reasonable, but I'm not a geek, so my social skills are more developed. Maybe it is hard to be nice for people like you.
Once again, your reply has NOTHING to do with his post, and you even admit that.
I'm not being an asshole because I'm pointing out that fact.
And no, carrying a grudge because of something that someone said sometime before and then bringing it up again is NOT being "reasonable". Nor is it indicative of normally developed social skills.
I don't care if you're a geek or not. Your reply still had NOTHING to do with his comment and EVERYTHING to do with a grudge you hold because of things he has said in the past.
If you're under the impression that the majority of the Iraqi people want the oppression that the Islamic Fascists want to bring, then you're sadly mistaken.
Nor have I ever said that they wanted Fascism.
If you're going to troll with strawmen, you really need to learn the terms you use.
And this somehow makes it better? Oh he only killed a couple hundred thousand, so he's just a bad guy, not a really bad guy. ??
I'm sure that if you want to think of it that way, you can.
Rather, how about some world history and perspective to correct the bullshit that people in the US seem to believe.
The fact is, other people have killed lots more people than Saddam did.
The fact is, people were/are being killed in African countries at a higher rate than were being killed in Iraq right before we invaded.
If it is pure body counts, Iraq was way down the list.
So, why was it so necessary to spend $1 BILLION a WEEK to get rid of some 3rd world tin pot dictator who couldn't even travel across his own country without body doubles?
By any criteria you choose (other than oil), there are many more places to help that would cost a fraction of that amount.
who cares, if they decide to do something bad then they'll get smashed to smithereens, but probability wise i bet they just have them to threaten and scare big people like the u.s. who likes to lurch over them and poke them in the buttocks.
By "something bad" I'm going to guess you mean "sell a nuke to a terrorist organization who then puts it on a ship and sails it into New York's harbour and detonates it wiping out millions of US citizens".
Is that what you meant?
I can see how some people might find that "annoy[ing]".
You may or may not remember that part of the UN resolution that stopped Gulf War I was not only that they end their chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs, but that they also show PROOF that they had done so. Saddam never presented any such proof. Hence, Saddam didn't comply with the UN resoltuions in the first place.
Back to the basics, you cannot "prove" a negative.
And if someone wants to release a similar app under the GPL, he is also Free to do so.Love, beauty, joy, Linux, Apache, Samba, php, summer days, etc.No you're not, you're trolling.
I've already explained that "Free" is about freedom, not price. Since that doesn't fit your troll, you keep claiming that it is about price.

You're right. But they don't have to pay to write one from scratch.
That's a lot of money to pay for developers to add in any features/functionality that you want but does not exist in OO.org.
Save $2 or $3 million this election cycle and save even more next cycle.
The best thing is, every year you can keep investing in development and still claim that you're saving $$millions$$ in license fees.
And if you hire local programmers, you're also "creating good jobs".
If it is a real attempt to migrate, wonderful.
If it is a blatant attempt to get Microsoft to lower their prices by threatening to move to a competitor, wonderful.
Either way, OO.org gets press coverage. That's better advertising than they could buy otherwise.
The more people hear about OO.org as an alternative to MSOffice, the better.

Why would I need to shut down a production server because I applied an update to Exim? This isn't about what the customer sees.
This is about the system itself.
If you feel the need to re-boot your system after anything other than a kernel patch, you need to either:
#1. Get yourself some education so you can maintain a decent system.
#2. Switch to a stable system that doesn't corrupt itself.
When the systems are stable and maintained correctly, the customers will see nice uptime. Don't confuse one of the results with the primary goal.
I'm running Linux servers at work that do not have Apache installed. Not at all.
So they will never be affected by any exploit that might be found for Apache.
Now, it is possible for a local exploit on a Windows system to activate a service that is currently de-activated.
To be safe, that code has to be removed. 100% off the system. Gone.
That's why I prefer Debian. It's easy to build it with just the features I need.
It's all about power.
If you have power at the state level, but not the federal level, you push State's Rights.

He isn't the one engaging in "Bush bashing".
He is replying to a reply to a reply to a comment about how this is about "Bush bashing".
That first post was a troll that included the troll phrase "Bush bashing". People replied to the troll.
People replied to the people who replied to the troll.
People replied to the people who replied to the people who replied to the troll.
Now you're getting bent out of shape because you cannot distinguish between one of those 3rd generation replies and the original troll.
That's simple Pavlovian response on your part. You react to the phrase you've seen and not to the content of the message you are replying to.
THAT'S HOW TROLLING WORKS.

I'm hoping English isn't your first language.
Your sentence is meaningless as you've written it.
Women are raped and murdered outside of Kabul.
Opium production is back to its pre-Taliban levels.
Huge profits from the drug trade are being funneled to the terrorist supporters who then fund the attacks in Iraq.
Warlords control most of the countryside.
If you wear a tee-shirt saying "I'm an American" and walk across Afghanistan, you will be killed or kidnapped.
The Taliban still have support amongst the people in the country and once we leave, they will most likely be back in power.
This is "real good"?

Look at all the other countries that are in violation of UN sanctions.
Yet we don't invade them.
We did it to control the oil.
Is that what you meant?
I can see how some people might find that "annoy[ing]".
There is nothing to stop N.K. from selling nukes on the open market.
