The show trials reference was to "altered" trials in general. The Soviet show trials were engineered as disinformation campaigns, and were considered in their day to be of the highest priority to the FCD (First Chief Directorate).

Mabye TWC just wanted to see the public's reaction on this one. Why would they release information about this only to quickly revert their intentions?
