I am proud to use cscmail which stores its mail in a sql database like postgresql or mysql.
So when my mail arrive in mbox format I give it to cscmail which eat it and produce a very nice, fast secure sql table.
If cscmail stop working (it happened) I can reach my mail with: "select * from mail;".
I disagree with you. I like freedom, with X I will not have freedom: binary only drivers (NVIDIA) open GL can run only if you start X (thanks DRI), etc. Now I would like to have some open source alternative.
You forgot to mention kgi+libggi+libggi3d which is already doing the same thing. BTW: remember that someone has decided for you (with DRI) that if you want open-gl you must startx.
I agree. Max os X interface is better. Period. Perhaps it does not use open-gl but surely it uses 3d feature of cards like z buffer alpha blendins anti alias. 3d is not only for games but also for apps. 2d is not dead. They can improve it

You are right. Infact the purpose of kgi+libggi was to be a media-abstraction layer. But nobody wants it.
Who decide what is good and what is not?

Now all people are happy because someone jumps over X and writes directly on framebuffer (BTW writing in framebuffer does not give you any hardware acceleration so it is not fast).
But some times ago some people made KGI + GGI. It was a good idea because it give us one thing : FREEDOM!!!
Freedom to choose what we use: do you like X? Use Xggi! Postscript? ggidgs! qt/gtk? made them for GGI.
Please note that with GGI you can use all things above in multitasking.
And KGI + GGI supported vga hardware acceleration.
Nobody helped them.
Then some one made dri and get full support by people, hardware writers. etc.
But you can use DRI _only_ with X. This is not freedom. This is microsofttish.
Now in this post read some people that write: "berlin is good but is not supported so do not use it or hope that it will replace X"
Remember: freedom! with GGI I can use X and berlin together.
Why you are so happy with framebuffer or DRI when there are people with better solution that do not get support???????
I repeat: who decide what is good and what is not????
It was obvious for me that P4 was an unfinished product even before this statement:
1) no multi cpu
2) new SSE2 fpu but old fpu slower
3) custom socket that will be replaced
4) little chaches
5) very big heatsink
It is like software, intel engineers are making a new cpu for.13 micron tecnology. But marketing people say "we need a new cpu now to make some money" so intel put out an unfinished/unoptimized cpu because some "stupid" people will surely buy it.
Can it be done with standard cpus ? I mean, buy a motherboard with 2 alpha (or 2 power pc) to use with linux. When used in native mode you have a very fast computer. If you have to run a x86 program one cpu translates and the other executes the code translated...
