It's the principle of the matter. It has absolutely nothing to do with the triviality of their DRM scheme.

If the various AA's want to INTENTIONALLY degrade their product and sell it, I won't lower myself to consumer servitude and continue to buy their Kool Aid.

They can fuck off. Apparently they don't want my money, so I'll go elsewhere with my money, or go without.

I'm not sure what type of DRM it had. It wouldn't play in any of my players, and out of principle I wasn't going to waste any time to crack it. If they don't want to treat me like a customer, I won't be their customer.

  8. my story. on Welcome to the Future of DRM Media · · Score: 5, Interesting

this is a repost of an AC post I did by accident.

I used to buy a pile of music cd's. Even after mp3's appeared, even after napster and their ilk... I liked having the CD, and I liked having the highest possible quality recording I could get.

What has happened now, is that the last two "CDs" I've bought had DRM on them, and the only reason I bought them is because I love the two bands (radiohead and the tea party). I can't play them without putting special sfotware on my XP box. Which I refuse to do because it's stupid and I paid for the CD in the first place.

So now I never listen to those two CDs.

And then I realised, why buy something I never listen to?

So I dont buy anymore CD's. That was a year ago.

that's extremely strange. Normally your DSL doesn't work before you lose your dial tone.

If you do indeed have the house wiring pulled off and you are only getting 2.5VDC across tip and ring, it sounds like your pair is shorted together outside... Funny the DSL still works!

Calling you number gives you a busy signal because the line is shorted out and hence the switch thinks you are off hook (using the phone.)

Call the telco and tell them to fix their damn plant! 6 times in the last 6 weeks? I'd be calling the regualtory body in your area.

Why is it then, that there seems to be so much disparity between Canada and the US with regards to the general populations capacity for critical thought? I'm not trying to start a flame war here honestly. I'm basing this statement on what I see as a massive difference between Canadian and American TV programming. Is everyone being force fed that drivel, or do they actually want it?

    3. CNN is completely biased. I remember during the opening hours of Iraq conflict (the current one) Aaron Brown trying not to cheer as he smirked watching the video feed of the tanks rolling into Iraq. "ooohhhh! look at the firepower! RA RA America." Way to be a journalist Aaron.

yeah I'm being a dork replying to my own post but sometimes you forget things.

Most IP networks that major telcos are setting up are NOT routed through the internet. It's a seperate network that they control from end to end. It's the smaller companies that send through the internet to save money and offer you good rates.

When VOIP is thouroughly implemented by the major players, I'll predict now that the bill for it will be the same as a regular phone bill, and sound the same as a regular call. It's just the backbone will by IP, not regular circuit switching. This saves the telcos money, and drives up profits.

(and yes I work for one of those thievin' telcos)

please don't throw rocks at me!

    amen.

I've seen some horrible setups of VOIP, because the network guys in charge had no idea what they were doing.

On the otherhand, I've seen good setups where the extra money was spent, and the network was designed properly, and the VOIP calls subjectively sounded no different than tdm 56k.

I think what's happening now, is that VOIP is new enough that most people don't know how to set it up properly yet. Give it some time, it'll be fine.

Most telcos are going to a an IP over SONET backbone now (atleast here in Canada), so get used to it, it's here to stay.

actually, (speaking as a telco employee) you can encrypt conversations over POTS with the proper hardware.
