Currently working on MP3 based initiatives in Europe I am really shocked by the fact that the larger public doesn't see the need to pay artists for their work! How much they get paid is a different story, but most people forget that certainly the young talent is relying heavily on intellectual property rights, as it might make the difference between music or a job at McDo! If Metallica sells 30% less CD's we are talking "turnover" and someone sellign a Gulfstream V, nothing else. We all thought that digital distribution of music could be a great way of promoting young talent (see Riffage, does anyone remember that one?)....by giving them a larger share in the proceeds of the sales, because of a distribution model at 0 cost. What we see now is Napster and the like hurting album sales, mergers in the industry as a result, and minumum sales contracts for artists are going up, squeezing a lot of young talent out of a contract. On the other hand is VC money for digital labels "verschwunden"....Hey who are we kidding here? Are we all counting on graddad to offer us the latest Moby so we can copy it and distribute it on Napster or Gnutella? What if granddad turn to Napster? What if we all do? Yep: no professional artists left...is this the future? Art, no thanks, we have peer to peer networks...
Yep, but you need to pay for popmail and they are considered as spammers, so a number of providers simply block th mail coming from their domains, certainly not a solution for professional users!
There's a couple of nice ones: for me the best is mailandnews.com: here you can access your mail over the web with lots of features and a very clear interface, you can also access it (simultaneaously) as POP3, and more importandly as IMAP4, meaning you can do the same as Hotmail with the offline client you find in Outlook Express 5, only...better! You can also use dots in your name instead of underscore. Overview of mailservices with IMAP or POP combined with webmail at: www.emailaddresses.com or at www.fepg.net
