    I don't believe that the GIMP is intended to replace Photoshop. At least not yet.

    Adobe has been in the game for a LONG time. There are so many Mac only graphics shops out there that it'll be a LONG time before the GIMP is a real threat.

    As I understand it, Photoshop's filters and color seperation are why it's still the top dog. When the GIMP's color seperation is up to snuff, that'll be a huge help. Also if (and I know it's a big IF) they can make the GIMP binary compatible with Photoshop's filters, then I think you'll see some people migrating away from Photoshop. But until that day, Adobe'e flagship product is quite safe...

    "Doing something without permission" isn't theft. It might be infringement, fraud, or trespassing, but unless you take away something the victim already had, no theft has occured.

    3. Set up a strict set of rules that define what is spam and what isn't, and all who are registered with a .mail domain must follow these rules, lest they be terminated as well.

    How do you prove it when someone forges headers and makes it look like you've spammed?

    How do you get "unterminated"?

    I nearly had a stroke when I got my first piece of spam back in 1995, but since then I've begun to take it less seriously. I'm not paying $80 per month for access, so it's not that big a deal to take 10 seconds to delete the spam.

    Ogg is a wrapper format that they put out. It serves much the same purpose as QuickTime, AVI, or ASF does. One wraps it around an encoded stream of audio or data. Currently, Ogg is mostly commonly used to contain audio data encoded with the Vorbis codec, which is notable for tending to sound better than MP3, being patent-free and having a completely free implementation for anyone to use.

    I hadn't payed much atten to Off Vorbis, I knew that it was a "free" (Speech and Beer) audio compression scheme, but I didn't know too much more than that.

    How long do you think it will be before some zealoutous asshats start demanding that we call it Ogg/Vorbis?

    To continue your gasoline example, it'd be like developing a method to fool the 'pay-at-the-pump' system into giving you gas without actually charging your credit card, and then telling the gas station that if they don't give you $100,000, you'll publish the program in the USA

    I suppose that it's all in the approach.

    I'd call it extortion if the approach was like this "If you don't give me 100,000 dollars, I'm going to release this product that can be used to defraud you." I wouldn't call it extortion if the approach was like this "I have a product that can be used to defraud you. Some people have expressed an interest in this product. I'd like to offer you the chance to buy all of the rights to this product and do with it whatever you choose. My asking price is $100,000. What do you say?"

    Unintended consequences. Until someone is actually convicted of theft, copyright infringement is not theft.

    Then please tell me why is it that the RIAA has never had someone prosecuted for theft. Theft is a state matter, they invariably use copyright law. That's a federal matter. Arguably far more serious than theft.

    I'm sick of this shit, people don't get it. Just because someone does something that you don't like, such as skipping commercials in PVR'd tv, using a spider to index webpages or downloading a Britney Spears MP3, that doesn't mean that they're stealing!

    Not necessarily, all of the extra traffic might lead the mid manager types think that banner ads and popups are working. I'm just waiting until the day that they start paying you to tattoo ads on your forehead.

    Apart from being threatened, surely Google have sufficiently intelligent engineers to figure out a solution to this problem?

    Aside from saving themselves $100k, they get to avoid the arms race. Their engineers vs. this programmer and the spammers. Over and over again, measuers, counter-meaures, counter-counter measures, counter-counter-counter measuers ad infinitum.

    Besides, if they get this guy sent to PITA prison, that will have a chilling effect on the next poor schmuck who is thinking of fucking with Google.

    I mean, he created a product. He was planning to sell it, but if Google is better served by that product not making it to market isn't it common sense that they might want to buy it?

    For example, if I developed a way to run my automobiles using water as fuel or to get 200 miles per gallon of gasoline ,I'd offer to sell them to the big oil companies before I went to Ford and GM.

    Linux and *BSD run the internet. But they are less attractive targets, they are administered by people who know what they're doing. Most of those Windows boxes out there don't have experienced admins to keep them in top shape.

    Capable admins are the reason why the linux and *BSD worlds aren't in as bad a shape as the Windows world. I guarantee that if all of those n00bs who are getting exploited on Windows switched to linux tomorrow, so would all of the virus/malware writers.

    I received 3 viruses via mail in the past week. Fortunately I know enough to not open them. Not everyone else is able to tell when a message has forged headers and looks official, even though it isn't.

    If every user switched to linux or mac, so would all of the virus writers. Windows is less secure, but there are also more people looking to exploit those weaknesses.

    If linux or mac were to become the top dog in the world of the average user, that would be the new target. Any security hole would be ruthlessly exploited.

    I think that the first step is for people to STOP USING OUTLOOK for email. Beyond we need better filters. We need people to learn a little something about computer security. We need people to learn about keeping their virus protection up to date. We need people to THINK a little.
