I've found a few. Mainly in the free ultima online servers. These servers usually boast an average player load of 10-50 players at a time with 200-300 total players. It turns into a community because you get to know the majority of the other players by reputation at least if not personally. Of course its only a game, but it is the closest match to what I would consider a community. That being a group of people where you are reasonably well known and know a significant amount of the group.
For example I'm a member of the local academic community and know quite a few people in my department and they know me.
I don't think Linux will be the OS for Average Joe's desktop. Sure Average Joe's small business may run a linux server but his desktop will always have to be something simple. Who knows, maybe one of the distributions will get to this point. That is what Red Hat is shooting for right? "Red Hat: Even a ludite can use our software"
Sorry, haven't had much coffee yet so I'll get to the point. Linux is a "geek" OS, if you don't like to compile kernels, browse packages, etc. you'd probably be happier somewhere else. It's not ready for Average Joe and Mediocre Sally. Eventually their will be a distribution for them but right now it's a "geek" os. This author needs to realize it is what it is and don't complain because it isn't everything to everyone.
Therefore my response is Winows 98 needs to be bigger. I want ftpd, telnetd, compilers, multiple editors etc on the default CD. Then maybe I'd think about running the OS.
I downloaded the demo too. It sounded fun before I played it but afterwards I was frustrated. I couldn't take the lack of control. Just can't stand watching the stupid heroes walk right past a monster.
YOU %*&...., oh guess I use windows too. I just don't like paying for it. Come on M$, give us 98 for free. It's outdated, my install is hosed and I don't want to buy the cd. You know linux has spoiled me, I don't want to pay for any software.
Ummm I do agree with you to a point but, you say Carmack isn't mass market? If I go to the generic software shop in the mall and see one of the Quake games on the shelf I'd say his work is mass market. Now, I agree with you because I'm not sure how good Carmack's grasp of the console market is. Quake did get ported to the N64 didn't it? I never played it but I have to assume it sucks.
One of the main factors driving computer game sales these days is broadband internet access. Frankly I'm not interested in buying a game unless it has promising multiplayer potential. The days of playing a game by yourself and with 4 of your bodies on a tv with the screen chopped into 4 tiny boxes is over. If consoles can't match computers in respect to multiplayer over the internet in the next couple of years they're in big trouble.
It seems to me that the games you see today are all rehashes of older games. Hence the categories of games (RPG,RTS,FPS,etc). They're all modeled of the same successor or successors. I've pretty much given up on finding a game that can hold my interest. RTS games were great when they came out but the last few years everyone I've played is the same old concept with a new spin. My starcraft addiction took all the fun out of RTS. The same could be said for all the other categories. The gaming industry needs to come up with some new types of games or stop releasing 12 games that only have relatively minor differences every year. How many first person shooters can you play before you're burnt out on the entire category of games?
You should check this program out. I'm feeling lazy so I'm not going to post a link but I'm sure you can find it on freshmeat. I wanna use it as soon as I have an extra machine laying around. Of course the next extra machine I have is going to be a firewall so the second extra machine I get is going to be a networked stereo.:) Well, if you can call a box with mp3s connected to a stereo, a stereo. Sure why not its only another component like a cd player.
Most browers keep a history. Why don't the parents just check the history every few days to see what the kids have been looking at? Sure the kid could delete the history but make that part of the computer use rules. Delete the history, no more computer use for little Johnny. My biggest concern with the censorship issue is that the government is trying to do the parents job. Parents have an obligation to control what their kids are exposed too. Lazy parents want the government to do it for them.
Now this doesn't deal with filtering software in schools and libraries. So, why doesn't each institution decide on their own what solution is best for them. Ideally hire someone to monitor the lab. They don't even have to be that attentive. It's gonna take a lot of balls to look up porn when the lab monitor could stroll by to see what youre doing at any minute
Ethics and moral are good. If you have enough money to technically afford them. Lots of them... Democracy is much more economical.
This may be too picky but... how are you comparing ethics and morals to democrarcy? Ethics and morals are concepts of how we should act and democracy is a form of government. Seems to me the three can coexist quite nicely. Now I just have to figure out why you need money to have ethics and morals.
I got this list in my e-mail last week. I read the rebutal to it yesterday. Sure some of its true, some of its not. Thats the way of politics. Truth doesn't matter. All that matters is people believe that it is true. How about some supporting facts? Then I'll give some credit to this arguement.
In my Software Engineering class, which is actually a progression of 2 classes to make one year long class, we are coding on a robot that runs linux. The system wouldn't work for a battle bot since a laptop just sits on the robot. That wouldn't be hard to take out. Knock off the laptop, slice the serial connection and the thing is essentially dead. But it is cool in that it uses sonar to detect motion. Currently it only heads for the motion and plays a soundbyte "Want a cookie?". It's a butler robot, but with the motion detection and a shotgun this thing would kick ass in battlebots.:) Easy changes to the code too. Take out the play_soundbyte() and replace it with fire_shotgun(); All we need it armor plating and to get rid of the laptop.
I always thought the remote controlled part of battle bots ruined it. A robot that uses software to control it would be much cooler. I imagine it would also take care of the robots with swinging arms NEVER hitting anything. As quake bots have shown us, software aims much better than a person can. Of course the robots may spend the whole match blasting the stupid buzz saws with its shotgun.
I always thought that shareholders are an unneccessray and, most likely, the reason that corporations are seen as corrupt. Lets face it, shareholders sit on their ass and earn profits for others peoples' work. Why aren't the employees getting this money? If a corporation has a good year the emplyees are the ones responsible and the shareholders reap the benefits. Divedends and wages are really nothing more than a monetary form of praise. Corporate America is sending the message that if you're rich and buy stock you've already done your part in soceity. Get a job on a board of directors somewhere and pretend to make important decisions. Not born rich? Get a job, you'll get enough table scraps to survive. I know there is always an exception to the rule but what is the percentage of middle/lower class workers earning enough money to be considered upper class. Hmmm, kinda funny how the labels for different income ranges seem to imply a cast system. Might as well change it to serf, landowner, ruling class and we're right back to something very similair to the feudal system of midevil Europe. Born into a powerful family means baron, king, other important person. Born a serf, means work your ass off for a shack, enough food to survive and some rags to cover your more sensitive areas.

Yea, guess you're right that is fun sometimes. You know if the console games could do both they would be serious competition for computers.
