  2. My take on CS vs. CE on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1

I went to RPI as an Electrical Engineer. I decided to switch to CE because I was less interested in hardware, more interested in software, and didn't want to take Advanced Calculus at 8 am.

I know many CS people. A lot of CS, to me, is learning a great deal of theory, design and documentation, and languages. Honestly, once you know how to program, a language is a language...its just syntax and such. Although esoteric knowledge of a language comes with practice.

As a CS you can do plenty of things from being a SysAdmin, a Web Bitch, an applications developer, or embedded systems.

As an Engineer, you have to go through all the tortures of Differetial Equations, Thermodynamics, Circuits as well as Data Structures and Algorithms, and other programming classes. In my opinion, a CE can do just a good a job programming as a CS, it all depends on the person.

But quite honestly, what percentage of CS know how to use a 'scope or a logic analyzer? How many CS have done either theoretical or practical work with electric circuits or transistors?

That kind of experience and/or classwork is ideal for embedded systems. Companies pay premium for Engineers that have a honed skill in certain microprocessors or previous background in industries. Embedded systems, I would think, are in much higher usage than web pages or Windows programs. (I bet you couldn't go one day without using embedded systems, unless you are a monk in the Himalays...).

I write firmware and I think a CE degree made me better off for embedded systems.

So it really depends what you want to do and if you want to avoid some hardcore engineering classes.

  3. Re:Severe Quality Control Problems on Memory Problems (And Fixes) For Palm-OS Devices · · Score: 1

In the engineering world, there are two types of decisions: the right one (aka the one made by engineers), and the money one (aka the one made the biznez men).

When demand is high and yields are low, the biznez men make decisions to scrap QA and ship to meet biznez numbers, metrics, and to appease the ever-so-picky gods of biznez (aka Wall Street).

Unfortunately, that is the sad truth of electronics and computer stuffs. Right now the economy is good, which means a need for more and more toys. That coupled with a shortage of raw materials...causes major problems.

It isn't just memory that is being hit, many electronic components are having shortages. Even BIG BLUE can't make enough hard drives...

    Oh well

Don't you know that Firmware fixes all hardware problems. And if it isn't firmware fixable, it is a "feature"!

Actually I am trying to hack the Palm Firmware to turn it into a Espresso machine. (if you tell that to someone in marketting, I bet they would believe you too....)

  5. Re:Am I the only one that hates Jim Carrey on Review: Man On The Moon · · Score: 1

Actually I have gotten quite sick of Jim Carrey's typical movies. Take an actor worth millions of dollars that "can't act", through him in a movie, make him say and do stupid things, then make butt-loads of money.

He was much more enjoyable as Fire Marshall Bill with his stupid humor, but then again that was only sketch comedy not multi-million dollar flicks.

Even though I refrain from seeing jim carey movies, I did see this one. He was suprisingly good in the movie. I amn't the biggest of andy kaufman fans, so i don't know he well he portrayed him. methinks jim carey is trying to pull a Tom Hanks. start off as a comedian, work your way into "drama", win an oscar for a drama film, then make 2 butt-loads of money. this film does add some credibility to his acting skills, but he did do a pretty good job as an "actor".

  7. superfluous hardware? on US Army Needs Linux Workstation Advice · · Score: 1

so i wonder why the army would need a dvd player. unless they decided to store this stuff on dvd, but i would assume a dvd writer would be need as well as a drive to read the discs....

if they were gonna back their info up, me thinks a tape drive may be more economical. one of those DLT tapes can store as much as 40 gig native with a upto 6MB/s xfer rate.

and in reference to why the army may need a soundcard, well if they are recording the stuff that goes through the communications systems or using it for "surveilance", a sound system may help.

you can also use sound to analyze the types of jets, guns, or missiles have been used, that is if you got a recording of it with your uber-cool spy plane!

in regards to a good case, i gots me a supermicro 750a full tower. now that hunk of steel rox!!! there are about 10-12 different places for cooling fans, many bays, as well as deburred edges. you can even remove the panels one at a time (i hate those damn U type covers)
