Many dumb people happen to be way happier than very smart people. Ignorance is bliss.
The thing is if you are one of those super geniuses then most people would be way dumber than you. So if you want a happy life, you should use your smarts to figure out how to enjoy being with stupid people - since there are lots more of them around;).
And why should it be hard? Lots of people can get along just fine with dumb dogs, so what's the problem with smart people getting along with good-natured dumb humans? Just look at the dumb happy face of a dog after you say "Good dog!" to him just for fetching a ball. There are millions of animals who are stupid and yet lead reasonably happy lives with humans.
Sure I couldn't talk meaningfully with a dog or the average person about cognitive dissonance etc, but I can talk about other stuff. And some dogs just sit and listen no matter what you say anyway;).
I just try to talk different stuff with different people. Different people will have different interests (politics, medicine, technology, IT stuff, religion, whisky, food, playing tag).
BTW if that sexy blonde is extremely dumb compared to you, is it some form of bestiality if you have sex with her? After all scientists like to say that humans share >98% genes with chimps, and if you two shared too many genes it'll be incest;).
People say beauty fades etc. That's true, but the mind fades too (usually lasts longer tho). As for "character", sure seems like lots of people get crankier and more bad natured as they get older. Many can't even realize simple stuff like: they're feeling short tempered because they're hungry, and so take measures to counteract that. You'd think they'd have learnt that after being around for many decades. But no...
To me if the girl is nice and kind to someone she doesn't have to be kind to at all, she's likely to be a genuinely kind person at heart (it'll take a severe degenerative brain disease to make her unkind - while not impossible, is not as likely). So even in the times when the embers of love grow dim, she'd still be kind to me - which will make it easier to keep things going till we manage to get the flames back up.
And hopefully I will be kind to her, there's the big problem- I'm not really such a nice guy. Oh well...
Don't forget the grandpas and grandmas who invented the sexual revolution;).
I wonder how many of them there are on Slashdot...
Would they go "Raves? Bah, back in my time, we did drugs and music too, and more - best of all there wasn't this thing called AIDS and the antibiotics still worked without half killing you".
> but I get why this type of environment encourages her to dream this scenario up
In most countries and societies it's the guy that's supposed to do most of the "pursuing". Guys that don't "make the move" on girls are far less likely to be passing their genes on.
Girls might not like being approached by guys that they don't find attractive (or even find disgusting), but the rules of the game make it inevitable. Especially if she's in a class with skewed gender ratios.
Which to me will work faster and be faster to set up.
With my proposal, you can arbitrarily foreground/raise any of the N windows you've mapped just by pressing say winkey+N, AND very importantly, you can change those mappings very quickly.
> currently convinced that most of the guys who try to help her out are hitting on her
Uh they ARE hitting on her, AND they are also trying to help her.
If she doesn't like that, that's her problem. She also likes complaining about the noise when opportunity knocks?
It's not like most of the other guys are bothering to help out the other guys.
What next, an attractive woman complaining that guys are giving her cars/money/help/etc for _free_? Yes they're giving her stuff in hope that she'd give them a chance. So what? Happens with many animals - birds, spiders, mammals.
But here's another tip for her. Most guys don't like the whiny ones that complain about gifts, and most nice guys will stop bothering women who tell them to go away.
So just whine about it enough and most of the guys will stop "bothering" her. She'll just be left with the assholes (who aren't in it for the long term so they don't care), and those she didn't say "go away" to (if she said it to everyone well that's her problem).
If you want to be safe, don't click on random links. And turn on "preview mode" in tinyurl and other url shortening services. Though you still might not know where/what it really leads to, with "preview mode" on, if you accidentally click on the link, it stops at the url shortening site.
It doesn't contain porn for that matter. Or even a rick roll.
If you're in a country where the courts and laws are harsh and merciless, it's best to make it a habit of being safe.
But those in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave can click away.
Even if they themselves aren't useful, they might give you an idea of how crap or "clever" the code is at some point;).
Anyway, to me one very important good coding practice is using standard or defacto standard libraries where possible instead of rolling your own (unless it means using those libraries in "rube goldberg" ways, in which case roll your own).
Because it means less to document, maintain and also it makes for easier debugging - because when you see "standard library method/function" you know what it does, you don't have to look it up and check it.
Whereas if the program is filled with custom library methods (even when standard ones that do the same thing exist) you will have a lot more work to figure out why and whether they do what you think they do and what they are supposed to do.
And that's why in the real world, writing in certain languages is better than in others, if it means you end up writing less code of your own. It doesn't matter if the language is so cool and powerful that you can write code that does zillions of stuff, but if it means you have to rewrite lots of stuff that would be standard in other languages, it's not as maintainable.
Yes in some scenarios you want a powerful language that helps you in the code that you write. But in most scenarios, you'd want a language that helps you in the code that you don't have to write;).
> There are plenty of reasons we shouldn't live forever (social, economic, etc)
The poor ones will still eat at McD, smoke etc, get obese and die young.
I'm sure the rich smart elite have long figured out that it's not such a bad thing for the rich, really.
Here's something to think about:
The infamous US Food Pyramid is not by the FDA or the US Department of Health. It's by the US Department of Agriculture. Same goes for its replacement "pyramid".
Sure I saw that, but how about the guy in this story? So far I don't hear that he has stashes of child porn - they had to undelete the pic to get him, and he didn't even destroy any hard drives (unlike the Vosburgh case).
And there's this thing called browser prefetching.
From that wiki article: "Google is the first well-known website that takes advantage of this feature so as to improve the user experience. If the first hit is considered very probable to be the desired hit, it is assigned as a prefetchable link.", a combination of a typo, Google tech and a prefetching browser might send you to jail.
And how about AVG (a popular AV program - popular I think because it's free, not because it's good):
Quote: "The prescanning of every link in search results also caused web sites to transfer more data than usual,"
In the nice neat world, only the bad people would visit such links. But we don't live in a nice neat world.
In the real world, it seems like so many people (even on Slashdot) have poor reading skills and might even read 4yo as "for you" (especially the more innocent minded porn seekers - you may think that ridiculous, but when you first started looking for porn did you really have an idea of the vast of stuff people consider porn?). As for the descriptive paragraphs of text, people here often don't even read the summary.
How hard would it be for a barely literate person (told by his friend "hey you can get lots of free porn on the Internet), to type the wrong thing, click on the "wrong" link and wham, land in prison for years.
And even if he knew what it said, does he deserve to be jailed for a decade because of that?
> we already have laws to cover that crime (child abuse, rape, etc.)
On that subject, wouldn't charging a 14 year old girl with distributing child porn because she sent nude pics of _herself_ to others be child abuse?
The thing is, given current laws and the insane way they are handling things, she might cause innocent people to go to jail for decades (reckless endangerment?), but as you said perhaps those laws or procedures should be fixed so that people like this guy don't go to jail.
Anyway, there are plenty of laws that the prosecutors, cops etc do NOT enforce. For instance adultery could mean life imprisonment in Michigan!
I'm sure there's adultery being committed in Michigan, so where are the life imprisonment cases?
You think adultery is not serious? Go take a survey of people whose spouses have been unfaithful. Ask them how serious it is, compared to say being mugged, beaten up, raped etc. Also ask scientists and researchers in the relevant fields (anthropology etc) on the long term impact of adultery to human society. Then you can work out whether adultery should be a crime or not and if it is, how serious a crime it should be regarded.
I doubt it was very funny to her when the US Gov decided to charge her. To me the people involved in doing that should be prosecuted for child abuse. Why isn't what they did considered child abuse?
And don't prosecutors and cops have more important cases to work on? Like those people killing, bashing, robbing each other? Or threatening each other with deadly force? Work on getting the violent crime statistics down.
Nowadays the US Prosecutors are great at playing the Bad Guys in Romeo and Juliet.
BTW, nowadays young girls seem to like that vampire story "Twilight". But in "Twilight", 100+ year old guys are hanging around in high schools and picking up high school girls...
Certainly no Romeo and Juliet. I doubt there's going to be a Twilight law.
> You are clearly not the [good] father of a 14 year old girl.
Of course not, I'm one of those virgin slashdotters. And no I have not donated to a sperm bank before.
If you don't understand it already, if you're a father in the USA, your precious 14 year old daughter could get touched and abused by the US Gov one day.
Quote: "A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography after posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com -- charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted."
Don't you even worry about that? It sure seems way too common in the US for the Government to abuse children that way. I'd punish my daughter but I'd rather the Government fuck off and leave my daughter alone.
Heck, if your daughter accidentally sends you a nude pic of herself, or gets it saved on your computer (borrows your laptop and leaves it in the browser cache), maybe the US Government will send both of you to prison (different prisons of course). The laws and prosecutors seem to be inclined that way.
There were lots of people who received email with attached encrypted zipfiles containing malware ( http://news.zdnet.co.uk/security/0,1000000189,39147909,00.htm ), and would enter the included passwords to access and run them. Some even feel a sort of compulsion to do it.
Then there's the case of "Traci Lords". She was a porn star who lied about her age and appeared in porn films and even Penthouse magazine when she was 15. So guess how many people might possess child porn unknowingly? Apparently those pictures and films are considered child porn by US laws.
Also think before you google for "Traci Lords" or similar stuff. Nowadays it is common for Google to automatically include pics as part of search results. I wonder how accurate the filters are at excluding stuff that is legally considered child porn in jurisdictions that you might wander into one day.
So Mr Smythe one day accidentally clicks and downloads a child porn image. He deletes it.
Then maybe a year later, Mr Smythe is looking for porn, and clicks on various links, and by mistake (or curiosity) clicks on "Minors having sex".
And the next day the FBI kick down his door, and search his computer for child porn.
They find nothing, except one _deleted_ child porn image.
From the article - the FBI won't provide any files: "The supposed video files actually were gibberish and contained no illegal images."
Think that can't happen? Why not? The "Justice System" has been merrily charging children for "distributing child porn" when they consensually send each other nude pics of themselves.
They love to say they are protecting the children. But it's clearly a lie!
How can you say you are protecting children when you are charging _children_, threatening them with decades in prison and actually sending some of them to prison for _consensual_[1] sex.
Which do you think will scar the child more and for longer? Being "touched" by the Government or being touched by the average pervert?
[1] How do you think you would feel if you were a 14 year old girl, have a 17 year old boyfriend, and you two have sex a few times (hey it feels good right?) and then sometime later, the cops take him away and The Government sends him to prison for a few decades and everyone says bad things about him and that he did a very bad thing to you. So who is scarring who for life here? If it was clearly consensual, maybe just let the minor decide whether it was rape or not, when the minor achieves legal adulthood.
He's not fearful because most of them don't have guns.
It's the criminals and wackos people worry about, and sometimes it's quite subjective who they are - your neighbour could see you as a wacko, and thus buy a gun, you see him as a wacko buying a gun, so you buy more guns. It just degenerates into an arms race.
You make guns easily available, more criminals will have them. In my country there are criminals with guns, but most of them don't have them, they make do with machetes etc. That's bad enough for me, don't need it to get worse.
Would I like a gun if someone has a machete, sure, but you'd be stupid to think that in a country where I had a gun he wouldn't have a gun.
It's just like the global military stuff.
You make nukes more easily available, more countries will have them.
People don't worry about the Switzerlands and Canadas of the world having nukes.
Otherwise the saying "a penny for your thoughts" will become out of date, or a sad joke.
It would cost you more than a penny. And it would legally be considered not your thoughts.
Too bad that because of crappy copyright laws we wouldn't be able to have artificial photographic memory, virtual telepathy (and telekinesis) and all that fancy stuff, without DRM and greed getting in the way.
None of the "pirates" would bother making use of her video clips. Many "pirate" shops in my country have 100% copies of the legit DVDs, with unskippable "anticopying" warning notices and all.
An important one is because Governments that want to stay in power must maintain a tight monopoly and control over violence. This is part of maintaining stability and maintaining power.
If you're the Ruler, and you let random people go around killing others, people would band together to protect themselves from other groups.
Eventually a group may form that's big and powerful enough to threaten you and your group of thugs/cops/military.
This is true whether you're a Democratic Government or an Evil Dictatorship.
Saddam stayed in power for so long because the only people who could go around killing random people were him and his thugs. There was some sort of law and order. People knew that if they followed "the rules", there is a very high chance that they and their families would still be alive the next day etc. They have something to lose if they broke the rules. People will put up with a lot just for stability in their lives. Say what you want about "give up liberty for safety" etc but people are not going to change.
Whereas in one of those "civil war" African countries, that's not the case and that's why they change governments every now and then.
Eventually Governments may "emerge" in those countries that maintain a tight monopoly on violence and then those governments will have a better chance of staying in power. If you maintain law and order in a village, that village becomes a better resource for your government.
The other "organism Governments" would just have poorer survival fitness. Same for governments that don't collect an official tax (remember most people want stability - so a predictable tax is better than a random confiscation of your livestock etc).
In short, I suggest that an "emergent" effect of persistent Governments is that murder is necessarily declared illegal.
Integrated graphics solutions (which are nondiscrete) tend to be way more discrete. Just one small chip (or even just part of another chip), quiet, fanless, small.

Murder is illegal for many reasons.
If I was banging a pretty girl in her early 20s, I'd be very happy to stick with my current perspective...
That's ok I can save him all the trouble of manufacturing a phone for me.
He can just give me the money for free.
Keep it simple right?
> Ok well if you do care about games, then you want a discreet graphics solution.
The graphics hardware for games tend to be rather indiscreet. Big rapidly spinning fans, hot, noisy, lots of shiny/glossy metal and big.
See the second pic:

Integrated graphics solutions (which are nondiscrete) tend to be way more discrete. Just one small chip (or even just part of another chip), quiet, fanless, small.
