  1. Nice. Have a cup of Boycott Novell. on Microsoft To Buy $100M More SUSE Support Vouchers · · Score: 0

Boycott Novell has good information about this slimy deal.

Here's Bruce Perens' 2002 perspective. All of this was planned in advance. It is put together very well by a poster named LARS:

However, a licensing dependency injects a control and ownership over otherwise Free systems. What is happening to FOSS distros like Fedora and Ubuntu have been getting infected with Microsoft's licensing (e.g. Mono) could be a risk for Apache. The reminder from these HP memos from 2002 is that MS could just be lining up its shots for a future lawsuit by using funding to leverage injecting proprietary material into general projects like Apache, Ubuntu, GNOME, etc., which it appears to be doing, and then cashing in (assuming MS is still around). Think a case like SCO but where MS has had a few years to ensure contamination has occurred before calling in the lawyers.

Novell is a traitor to software freedom and things will not end well for them.

  2. I agree .... oh, wait. on Anti-Net Neutrality Astroturfer Exposed · · Score: -1, Troll

Yes, I too can see why someone would want to be a conspiracy theorist. The money is great and there apparently is not much competition in the business, judging from the low quality of LawMedia's work. All you have to really have is a hatred of your fellow man.

Or, were you trying to say that none of what was exposed really exists? You are detatched from reality if don't think that unethical companies like Microsoft don't hire liars to fake out law makers and other influential people. Turn off the TV, Wake up and smell the astroturf.

  3. $250 Cable Bills Increasingly Impractical. on MythTV Allows Multiple Front-Ends On Wide Range of Platforms · · Score: 0, Redundant

There's no way cable is going to win the technology race. Your pay per play DVR won't look so great when you get the bill. I'll stick to component outputs, thank you very much, until the smoke clears. When it things get too hostile, I'll ditch the cable entirely. TV broadcast spectrum used for internet access will obsolete cable by the time all the lock in is in place.

  4. DRM'd Base? No Thanks. on MythTV Allows Multiple Front-Ends On Wide Range of Platforms · · Score: 3, Insightful

Anyone familiar with MythTV knows that it can use multiple front ends. A port to Windows or Mac sounds good because the monopoly makes some hardware difficult to use. It's not such a great idea if you want control of your media.

  7. Re:Competiton everywhere for them. on Microsoft Tries a New Ad Agency · · Score: 0, Troll

Unless you know Mac users, you don't have a reasonable basis for comparison. Apple allows free upgrades to their OS to versions a couple of points behind their latest and greatest. Even if they don't bother, 2001 OSX is still better than 2008 Vista. Finally, all the Mac users I know are happy people and all the XP people I know hate their computer. The group of people I know may not be representative but the software comparison was made by none other than Jim Alchin and upgrade policy is fact. Those things make Mac a better deal even if my Mac friends are somehow detached from some horrible Redmond reality.

The GNU/Linux case speaks for itself. It works well on cheap hardware and is self updating to as close to bleeding edge as you want. A free software user gets freedom and value for their hardware and can select hardware that fits their budget. Once it's working, it stays that way and upgrades are painless. Windows, on the other hand, requires all sorts of upkeep and is a constant struggle.

  8. You can't sign yourself into slavery. on Non-Compete Clauses Thrown Out In California · · Score: 4, Insightful

    Contracts can't violate laws.

It's amazing non-compete held up for as long as it did. A contract that tells you what you can or can't do outside of your employment is obviously flawed. With the economy going in the shitter, people are going to be pushing back harder against clauses that keep them from working and both state and federal courts are going to be receptive.
