  1. Re:Why? on The Dual 1GHz Pentium III Myth · · Score: 1

High Mhz processors are not originally intended for the consumer market, they're aimed at the business market. I work at an engineering lab and whe we buy computers we buy the fastest box they have with al the RAM they can cram into it. It's people like US that demand 1Ghz CPU's. The people with ancient P-3 600 boxes from 6 months ago will likely all get 1Ghz boxes and the 600's will be tossed over to sales (with 512M of RAM, no less) as useless old technology.

I agree with robinjo's position, I think that the statement "Flamers have style, you not" is not only false but it is an ad hominem attack which is no better than what Talisman did. I would agree that some flamers have style, but the majority are simply profane and abusive (I wasn't an English major, but I wouldn't consider that style). In that sense, I think that Talisman is a fairly typical flamer. Good reason to simply ignore his posts and move on. Giving flamers attention simply encourages them.

nntp (why did they create it anyway when we can have e-mail?)

If you don't understand the difference between usenet and e-mail then why do you even care about this? You seem extremely incensed because @Home ignored repeated requests to address this problem and now they are subject to the UDP (which ALL companies that run nntp servers know about ahead of time). Is this because it may interrupt your access to pr0n and war3z? The fundamental issue here is quite simple. The UDP is an advisory to nntp providers. They can follow it or ignore it as they choose. The UDP simply says "ISP X has a documented history of being a source of (spam | mailbombs | etc). Repeated requests for them to address this problem have been ignored. We are now announcing a boycott of them until they clean up their act. If they clean up their act before date xx.xx.xxxx then the boycott will not go into effect. As soon as they do clean up their act, the boycott will be ended."

In case you don't completely understand the entire scope of a UDP, here it goes: You are a user on ISP A. ISP A is UDP'd. No one is preventing ISP A's users from posting usenet articles, it's just that they will only exist on ISP A's nntp server, and not be mirrored across the world. ISP A's users will not be prevented from GETTING usenet articles at all, only from posting them.

  8. Re:The sexual revolution is a tragedy on XXX!!: Sex and Free Speech · · Score: 1
I've found that most people who complain about how horrible the sexual revolution was are people who didn't benefit from it.

And interestingly enough the poster seems to believe that STD's, broken homes, AIDS, single parent households, and neurotic societies did not exist before the mid 1970's. I will belabor the obvious by pointing out that all of these except for AIDS have been documented problems throughout all of human history (Leviticus was almost certainly written pre 1970 and large portions of it deal with STD's; broken homes, neuroses, and single parent households have been documented realities since before the time of Christ), and AIDS originated in a country that did not participate in the sexual revolution. While the morality of your message is admirable, keep in mind that it is not necessarily the morality of your neighbor.
