We use Self Signed Certs for a lot of applications simply to provide encryption. You can buy a real cert in exactly 90 seconds (or thereabouts) from Rapil SSL or some other company like that. They do no checking whatsoever and only require that the cert is sent to an email address at the domain that is applying for the cert. SSL Only provides encryption, and I wouldn't personally trust them for identification.
