  1. First things first on When Cellphones Become Webservers · · Score: 1

First I'd like Verizon to let me use my FiOS connection as a web server, then I'll worry about having one on my cellphone.

  2. Re:Data retention won't happen... on U.S. Government Demands ISP Data Retention · · Score: 1

Yeah I think that a similar type of application should be used for general use for the purposes of making data retention less feasible. I'm guessing there is some open source type application that crawls websites already, but I don't have time to look that up right now. I would think accessing as many different servers as possible would be a better approach than hammering individual servers.

Maybe having a program that crawls many different web sites may even have practical use for the average person. I don't really know. But it would make data retention much more difficult.

  3. Re:Data retention won't happen... on U.S. Government Demands ISP Data Retention · · Score: 1
The requirements for complete data retention for a standard broadband service like a T1, DSL, or cable link are on the order of several hundred GB per month, or more than a terabyte per year. Even just forcing the use of a reverse web proxy and keeping the logs from that and your SMTP/POP/IMAP logs are going to run several GB per year, per person. A site doing ~1 million hits a day fills up a 40GB log partition in about a week, or 15TB per year.
Maybe we should make this even worse. Programs could easily be designed to randomly visit hundreds of websites, and put hundreds of random search terms in every search engine imaginable. All this while someone is not actively using their computer or internet connection. A lot of people doing that would make the major providers stand out against this proposition even more.

absolutely correct, in my opinion. they should go after the source of the leak, not the news media for reporting what they innocently received.

if something is so classified, maybe the government needs to be more selective about who they tell it to.

As soon as I read this I realized I forgot to send in the form for the $100 rebate for the last computer I bought at Best Buy. When I bought it, I asked them if there was any mail-in rebates. I was just hoping they'd say no.

My recent experience with dell was very similar. My laptop wouldn't turn on and I called them up.

They had it picked up later that day, and two days later it arrived back repaired. They had even replaced the case, which I hadn't even asked for.

If patients in MA can't find out who the problem doctors are, I don't see why doctors should be able to see the names of patients who sued.

I'm sure there is enough publicly available information to compile a similar web site about problem doctors for patients to see. It doesn't take a law to release private information to get this done. All it takes is a few people to start a web site and start collecting information about doctors. It's all about freedom of speech

I would think it would just be the opposite.

If your neighbors are only doing email and casual browsing then that leaves more bandwidth for you, so you're not causing a problem. If you're around a number of people who download a lot, they might need to crack down on someone's insane amount of bandwidth to help everyone out.

the movie industry has pushed hard to get us to buy the current generations of DVD, so that they can sell us the exact same movie 2 years from now in HDDVD format
And I thought the movie industry was actually giving us just what we wanted: Movies on a format that is current as of today.
