For a small to medium business, I have had success with using naming themes.
Linux servers are periodic elements. NAS file servers regardless of their OS are planets and moons.
It really came down to unique naming that non-technical personnel could say and remember. Using usage acronyms and numbers was hopeless and re-provisioning made the numbering scheme undesirable after a few years. My least favorite names were manufacturer and a number "DELL47".
PS: Window workstations are all variants of trees. In a small company allowing some users to pick their computer name in a large enough theme that is not super geeky gives them some sense of ownership.
