  1. More patents... on PTO's New DNA Guidelines · · Score: 1
I'm going to patent the process of splitting one object with the sharpened side of another object.

Things that will fall under this patent:
Common knives, gotta pay me royalties
Industrial cutting tools such as a jackhammer or a wedge
Any pocket knife type invention, hunters will fear me!

  2. Re:How can a gene patent hold in court? on PTO's New DNA Guidelines · · Score: 1
What you are talking about is patenting a life-saving procedure, say a patent on a cancer-killer. Now you have five million people in the USA who need this genetic code, or they will die. The company refuses to give them the procedure, however, because they are not able to pay for the procedure (what would be a price limit for this? Ten million US$ or your life?). The company gets rich and the population decreases by 5 M. If that's not illegal in law, it is in ethics. What you are describing is a Shadowrun-esque world where megacorps own everything, including the bodies of their employees...

  3. All about Judicious Discipline on "I Would Strongly Advocate Full Disclosure" · · Score: 1
A book by Forrest Gathercoal named Judicious Discipline offers an excellent alternative to the current method of regulation. The theory is founded on giving kids the responsibility. If they make mature choices they are treated maturely, if they don't thats alright because they'll learn in time. The whole system works rather well (IMHO) and is an intriguing alternative to the 'rewards and punishments' method. After all, if a kid is mature at age 14, why not treat him like he deserves rather than like a kid? Oh well.

Sorry for this reaction, but I can't help myself:
I am currently forced to use AOL. I cannot hook up to the internet even through an ISP I pay for. AOL is in the buisiness of running lives. People everyday rely upon AOL info and only AOL info. TW is just expanding the playing field to offline content. It wouldn't be so bad, except that AOL's 'services' are lacking horribly. I run at 5K/sec when I should be getting much, much more (shotgun 56k)

Perhaps Slashdot will become the 'Linux' of information, being to AOL/TW what Linux is to M$...
BTW, I'm currently forced to use an AOL account. It is not only completely and disgustingly restricted, its difficult to actually get onto the WWW. Many AOL'ers think that when they are online they are connected to the net, but infact they are being force-fed AOL biased info. I fear more media may end up this way...
