It seems to me that the best way for you to help him would be helping him learn how to learn in the programming space. When he hits a problem, help him learn how to search for more information rather than giving him the answer.
It might also be worthwhile for you to set up the development environment for whatever it is he wants to build. That way he can jump right in to the code.
