Has anyone visited the Microsoft page on Smart tags? A quick skim clued me in on a program to create my own smart tag xml file. A file I create and control to insert links of my choosing! Think about it. If I ran a company that offered tons of info and I was able to create one of these files and give it out for free imagine all the links that would exist back to my site. People could get the xml file from my site purely out of their own choosing!!! They install it and then run around the web. Since I assume they installed it they want it there so they will click the links.
Instead of seeing this everyone is whining about a browser they shouldn't even be using since you all hate the windows plateform so much. On the other side of the pipe insert the damned tags and shutup. Most major websites now use a template system it wouldn't be that hard to insert a single meta tag into every generated page using that template system.
Also this technology is not new. People having been using plug ins for both netscape and IE for a few years that do this. They have apparently generated enough buzz to make it seem like a very neat feature to add. I am just so baffled at all the whining going on. There isn't a need. Turn it off, insert a tag, don't use the browser, start helping with mozilla do any of those other things since it is much more productive than whining.
Still in development? What language isn't being added to and being upgraded. Sites like Zend.com would make you think otherwise.
I use PHP quite well and if it is in it's developing stage that would only impress me more.
More on topic though I have seen I think at least thre different Trade Wars versions out there. One called Merchant Empires (also found at sourceforge) uses posgresql/php/python to get its job done. Though it does stray a bit from the original.
I would be truly interested to find a LORD or Netrunner or BRE web based games.
I have this book in addition to PHP3 Programming Browser-Based Applications.
The later was the first book I owned on the language, it was not however my first material on the language which happened to be www.php.net. Anyway I went on a tangent, what I ment to say was that the later though good material to get my hands dirty it was Pro. PHP Prog. that really got me hooked on PHP. Great examples and the case studies though I have never read them all the way through, I had been able to learn many do's and don'ts.
What I was scared most of all when I first messed with php was everyone around me telling me that is was ASP for linux. I had never used ASP and have never used databases with a website before but now I have no clue how I might create a website without a database attached to it somehow.
In case the point was missed with all the droopy comments, I greatly enjoyed the Wrox press book Professional PHP Prgramming as well.
Now I will be just as unproductive in Linux as I was in Windows. I for one am damn happy official messengers are being created. I need to keep in touch with all my windows friends ya know.
A compiled pascal CGI app (comes with a neat example in the docs), it has I think OpenGL support (or will have) runs on multiple OS's so a simple hack can be easily used cross platform. Much like you would a simple perl script without having to need all the proper libs installed or have ActiveState on your Win32 box.
Still above all it serves as a learning application, and with Delphi out here in the real world. You can write a GUI app in Delphi for Win32, then reuse most of your existing code for linux or whatever OS.
Plus it's here now to bridge the gap between Win32 and Linux and a public legal copy of Kylix ain't
I see many uses other than just learning to program.
Hey, it that's what it takes to get these companies to support a free software project, I'll tolerate them.
Careful what you say there that could be taken the wrong way by other names-withheld-companies. These are sponsorships that show up in the clockworkings of linux, they won't do much after the system is up and running for days and days. I can easily see how this can get out of hand and I would agree that this sort of name plugging is ok, it could get worse and look like a company just shelled over 30k to fill a line on the screen. Think command prompt here... Though just saying "I will deal with it so long as I get my software working correctly." is a bit dangerous. The software is free but its development needs funding from someplace.
WTF? Since when did AOL have such a HUGE part in the open source movement. Last time I visited freshmeat in search of the latest update or delphree I don't remember seeing huge glaring AOL logo's on each and every project.
Too bad he didn't check into all his facts, correction too bad he didn't check into any facts. Such propaganda like this will put a tarnish on the entire idealogy of open source projects in the future.
Perhaps we should all look for funding from AOL for our open source projects in the future. =)
Is there no higher point than 5? This post does a grand job of laying it out for all of us billions who would simply be happy reading the subject then howl at Amazon and scream about karma.
Anyhow, I looked around a bit and looks true enough. Makes you think if the suit is so out there why bother? Amazon has the fire power to defend itself against this, just as I can defend myself from an ant. For those thinking maybe the ant could win, nah eh, got a boot, a can of raid, a whole can of hair spray.
Same time though what if these iStation (itouch) guys win? First I would eat my words about the ant. Second it means you can patent interaction, not a way of interaction, just the fact of interaction. Sure they could be similar, but come on now. You see link, you click, you hear. Does this mean my digital cables music channels are in violation too?
Is this supposed to be a April Fool's joke for the completely clueless? I mean really now. An email virus that can blow up my computer. NO FEAR! note: I use KVM switches at least 30 feet from my cpu('s).
Ohh yeah, I remember those days. Running a VBBS/2 system I had the freedom of 'kinda' playing and doing other things on my machine while os/2 did it's best to take care of a bbs on my speedy super fast 486/66 with an unheard of amount of memory at the time, over 20 megs!. Anyhow I was talking about waking up for turns. I played trade wars and would often come across a undiscovered planet late in my turns and would wake early so no one else would make a jump on my new found resource. Don't get me wrong I never cheated on my users when I was a sysop. Though there were always better players that sometimes made me wish I did.

Wait I haven't got any windows friends...

Perhaps it was a good way to clear out some dead accounts and such. It just took the Metallica deal to give 'em enough room to do it.
We put the BAN in Bandwidth!
