  1. iMac? on Mac mini Built Into Wall · · Score: 1

um... the current iMac's have a VESA mount, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and integrated DVD burner & USB...

mount the dang thing on the wall.

Apple's got a refurb 17" iMac G5 w/SuperDrive for $1000. Add Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and you're talking another $159. VESA wall-mount is about $100. Apple BT Keybord $60. Logitec BT Mouse (so you get more then one button) $60... done.

if you really want to take up counter space, and not mount it on the wall... save the $100. Or use the $100 and find a zero footprint base.

This solution is cheaper.. MUCH faster... cleaner... WAY easier... and less wet and dusty.

  2. Exists today in Germany... kinda on Using Cell Devices To Monitor Traffic Flow · · Score: 1

I just picked a Volvo up in Sweden. The Volvo has an integrated GPS/Navigation system in it. I purchased a map of Germany, and was pleased to find that the software on the GPS system dtects signals broadcast by traffic FM radio stations. The FM radio stations indicate where traffic congestion is, and the readout got put up on the GPS map! Granted ther weren't using cell phones to track the traffic... but I thought it was wicked cool to be able to route around a traffic jam on the way to Frankfurt from Munich... without having to speak a word of German. :) - matthewk (MSK2)

  3. Re:Mic's on Technology And The XFL · · Score: 1
I was at the Oulaws game in Las Vegas...

The defense/offence could NOT hear the huddle. They muted (my god... Muted?) the mikes while the teams were in a huddle.

I know that's a banal overuse of technology (utalizing the mute button)... and one that is hardly excusable (can you all hear my dripping sarchasm?)... but that's what they did.

I like the "show", I liked the football, and I liked the cheerleaders. My wife and I had a great time at the game, and we're looking forward to the next four home games! :)

  4. Re:These services are way beyond Quicken/Wells Far on On Paying Bills Online · · Score: 1

I use paymybills also... and I've had mixed results.

Twice (in as many months) they have "delayed" processing a bill becaise they don't have enough staff to accomidate the demand for thier service.

    Obviously this is unacceptable.

I do enjoy the convienence. I also travel alot, and being able to recieve all of my bills in a central, on-line place, and pay on a scedule or at my leasure, is EXTREMELY benificial.

  5. paper still a valid medium on Would You Ever Read A Newspaper Again? · · Score: 1

Being a frequent traveler, I have to say that I often still read paper newspapers (and news magazines as well). Sitting on an airplane (or at a gate) with an open computer (or straining to read a PDA screen) is not exactly the stress-reducing activity that is often necessary in dealing with the traveling public.

A paper newspaper allows an individual to create an area of personal space (by opening and "fluffing" the paper), as well as get lost in small news pieces... it's enough to distract you from the harsh reality of your current surroundings, but not enough to cause you to miss your flight.

Having said that... this will change (IMnsHO).

The emerging buzzword (sic.) technology focused on creating "Digital Books" shows quite a lot of promise. Having been a developer on the Apple Newton project, I started to see the promise of this application in the early 90's.

Ultra-High resolution screens, instant-on, long battery life, and full color (to display those oh-so-annoying "infographics")) will be necessary to replace readers' beloved paper copies of news media.

There's also the social leap that the world needs to take... curling up with the Sunday paper on a rainy day is a completely visceral experience. The smell of the newsprint, and the feel of paper is a HUGE part of this ritual....

anyhow... that's my $0.02... and my first slashdot post.... be kind {wimper}.
