  1. Re:Prints on Would Ansel Adams Have Gone Digital? · · Score: 1

I have a print, not by Adams but from an original 8x10 negative printed according to his instructions.

To examine up close it is a thing of great beauty and depth.

A 1:1 enlargement of the negative has far more detail than they eye can really see but I think you get a sense of it being there.

Sure, a digital print hung on the wall across the room looks great, the closer you get, the worse they look.

On another topic, Adams manipulated like crazy: all sorts of filters and masses of dodging and burning. I'm sure he would have used Photoshop or similar with great effect.

  2. But wait, there's more.. on Review: Nex II CF MP3 Player · · Score: 5, Informative

I've had one of these players for many months and they are good. Some other features, not mentioned are:
    - graphic equalizer (handy for tuning for headphones with no bass)
    - spectrum display (as an alternative to the normal track display)
    - CF is the best value per megabyte of any storage

On the negative side, the slot for the CF card is too deep and you can miss the pins if not careful.

In 1992 I interviewed Mr Gates for ABC Radio (Australia). I asked him if he did any programming any more and he said the last thing he actually coded himself was part of the basic in the Tandy Model 100.

Can someone send me the original source of this story? I tried the NTC site at http://www.ntc.gov.ph/ but it isn't in their press release area.
The author has no email link and the poster's site is broken as far as I can tell.

  5. It's a double-edged sword on Excite@Home Claims Broadband 'Safe' · · Score: 5

I use the austrialian excite@home, and we get probed every day. It's important to warn consumers about the risks, - don't turn any services on that you can't control, stay up to date etc.

What would be worse would be for the broadband provider to put a big filtered firewall in the way so I couldn't use the internet the way I want.

What might be best is the ability for consumers to choose "safe/protected" mode or "open" mode where we are responsible for our own firewall.
