  1. Thank you on Video Conferencing for Unix? · · Score: 1

This does look like an excellent package. I may try it tonight. This one looks like is may solve some of the problems I am having.

  2. Yup. It could, if... on Is Mac OS X Threatening Linux? · · Score: 1

MacOSX is a step in the right direction, but as many people have already stated it is only available for the Mac. If they did create an Intel version (Which is very easily ported due to the BSD core), then they would grab a greater portion of the desktop business market.

Linux being an Open Source OS hurts it as much as helps it. Many businesses avoid Linux due to its 'hack' reputation and low support structure. This could all change by a major company backing it. Apple is one name that many businesses would trust for support and implementation.

Companies do not want to search web pages to get hacked drivers for their hardware. They want HP to make that driver. Apple will work with Hardware manufacturers to make that happen.

Many applications will already be ported to MacOSX. If they port the major apps, and they may, then many businesses would look at upgrading these applications on a new OS rather then the one they currently have as long as the new OS has security, reliability and support. MacOSX will!

If Apple plays their cards right, they could really make hit! As for Linux, it would always be there but it would be hurt against the desktop market.

Free may be nice, but when a company needs to support 1000 PC's, they can afford the cost of the OS. They want support.

  3. MPstar ADA880's on Nomad Portable Jukebox MP3 Player Reviewed · · Score: 1

I just purchased the "Dorm_Blaster" bundle at www.overstock.com. It comes with a set of Altec Lansing ATA880 speakers and a MPstar MP3/CD player. I have to say that I just love it! The MPstar is great! Although it is not designed to be a portable unit (no batteries and larger them most), it is easily portable for the non jogger. I had it fall off the dash of my car and not skip while playing an MP3. CD playback will skip a little though.

The speakers are also great for the price and since both of these units easily sell for $110+ on their own, it is a great deal.

  4. This is just bull! on An Open Letter From Bob Young · · Score: 1

Let's face it. This whole debate about bugs is bull anyway!

Redhat is just a distribution. They do what they can to make their distribution stable; But blaming them for bugs anyway is ignorant. I have been using Open Source software for many years now and no matter how many "stable release" applications I have seen, the next release has "BUG FIX:" in the change log.

Bugs are a reality. ALL distributions have them and they have them in numbers. There isn't any way to keep it bug free and keep the distribution current.

The 2500 bugs is an untrue number as it was formed on all the bugs in the buglist no matter what the distribution version was. I am sure RedHat has well over that number, as do Mandrake, Suse, Corel, etc...

Yes, RedHat shipped with a few show stoppers. Yes, you were able to read all about them the next day. What is great about RedHat is that you read about these bugs from RedHat! They will be fixed as they have proven in the past!

Keep Open Source real by embrasing it. Stop fighting it!

Keep up the good work RedHat, Mandrake, Suse, etc!!! You have helped make it what it is!

  5. I like the views on Katz v Taco: Futurama · · Score: 1

Ok. I have to admit, this is one of the only times I have seen something in a /. article I never thought I would see... Different views!

Whatever people may think of the actual articles, this is by far two very different views on the same subject and I am glad I had the chance to see both views!

Katz and Taco did a wonderful job at taking two different directions while wondering the same path. I just wish more /. articles could have this type of time taken with them. I find that too many times the articles are written from just one view and usually a little to biased for my taste.

Thanks ./! You did this well...

  6. And Apple is not an OEM on Gassee Challenges OEMs · · Score: 1

You are right, Apple is not an OEM. Apple is also not giving users a choice of operating systems. You can't buy a Mac without the Apple System OS. I know this... I own 2. I also purchased BeOS separatley, yet I HAD to pay for MacOS when I purchased my Mac. I was not given a choice, nor could I buy the Mac without the OS.

Why should apple be excluded? This is about the users having a choice not the computer manufacturers!

"Apple is perfectly within their rights to ship their own OS on their own hardware'. Hmmm... Let's examine this statement. Dell, Compaq and Gateway make their own hardware, so they must have the right to ship whatever OS they want with their systems?! NO! I do not want to pay for an OS I do not want. Be it MacOS, Windows, OS/2 or whatever. It is MY money and I will spend it on what I want!

If you really think that MacOS is free with your Mac, guess again!

  7. BeOS is not Linux on Gassee Challenges OEMs · · Score: 1

I, for one have, a different view of this comment. I do not like it. Although BeOS is an excellent operating system, it is not in the same league as Linux. The main reason, BeOS is not Open Source nor is it free.

My question is this: Why not say Solaris, SCO, OS/2, BSD or any of the other excellent operating systems that are out on the market. They are all great systems and commercial, just like BeOS. SCO and Solaris have a non-commercial free version (Pay for media). BSD has FreeBSD. OS/2 is around the same price as BeOS.

I guess my rant is this... is BeOS making this challenge to place itself in the same media hype that Linux is in or is it truely a challenge against Microsoft?! Are they also challenging Apple to do the same?

  8. Freshmeat.net on A Bit About Freshmeat · · Score: 1

Well, here is my 2 cents on this subject:

I have used Freshmeat for about a year now and have found it a valuable source of information.
One that has not been duplicated. I found the web page to be not only professional but also
extremely imaginative. I did not get a chance to see the new web page design, but I am sure
that it was either the standards I have come to expect from this web page or had far excelled
    them.

Although, when I loaded the web page today I saw something I could not believe. There
wasn't professionalism. There was only the 'rant' of a desperate person. This is something I
    never thought I would see.

My point? Freshmeat, no longer holds that same status in my eyes. I no longer see it as a
professional web page. If the webmaster is going to act like a child, then expect to be thought
of the same. He has plenty of reason to object to the emails he received and had plenty of other
ways of making his point. He has forced the thousands of supportive users of the web site to
make them pay for the (maybe) hundred unappreciative users. Not a good thing in my eyes! I
did not even see anything in his 'rant' about those that supported him during this.

If you are going to take down the web page, then do so. If not, just put the thing back up.
Don't play games. Games are for kids!

P.s. As I said before, I loved Freshmeat and will continue to do so. But this is absurd.
