  1. I was hit by it... on Fake Subpoenas Sent To CEOs For Social Engineering · · Score: 5, Informative

I saw it on my Treo and it looked very real - at first. There were four issues: It was a Federal subpoena but it mentioned a "city prosecutor" down towards the end. This started some suspicion.
Then I noticed that it was a grand jury for a civil trial. So I'm wondering, do they use grand jury's for civil trials? It was in California, so I thought maybe they somehow did. Then, I could see that they wanted a credit card to get the information. Big red flag, but it used pricing by the page - so I thought only the government could dream up something like this and maybe it was legit. Finally, the domain name for the link to the credit card page looked okay, but it was phony.

All and all, I'll bet a number of people fell for it because the targeting was so good.

  2. The reality is that with free data.... on Weather Service Becoming More Tech Friendly · · Score: 1

...some of the weather companies (there are probably a few dozen around the country - not just in PA), will shed people or themselves.

I'm, not so sure the government should be in the weather business, but it's a side effect of aviation, NASA, etc. So we'll have to live with it. What can the weather companies offer beyond what the government can offer. The private weather market will have to rethink itself. I'm sure there will be room for a few companies to re-package the data in a friendlier form, but the industry employment will drop like a rock. Some percentage of the people working in the industry can find new employment working for companies that will use the data. The rest will be doing something else.

  3. Re:Electoral college on Statistics, Elections, Frustration · · Score: 1

The beauty of the EC system is it makes each vote really count. There's got to be thousands of people in Florida kicking themselves about not voting. This system makes it all come right down to you and your neighbor - it makes it personal. Everyone talks about making each vote count; this system exemplifies it - and in this situation it's obvious! I say keep it!
