  1. No mention of XML's creators? on Celebrate the XML Decade · · Score: 3, Informative

Strange that an article celebrating XML's anniversary would neglect to mention XML's creator. I wonder if the fact he works for a competitor has anything to do with it...

  2. This woman must know me... on How To Deal With (Techie) Prima Donnas · · Score: 1

The syndrome often is found in someone like this: a young and brilliant software developer who lives and breathes IT. A true geek, Hal spends a lot of work time in techie chat rooms engaged in in-depth UNIX conversations, sharing code and discussing programming challenges. Despite his inclination to partake in on-the-job recreation, Hal is a prolific and productive programmer. So far, so good. Just another proud member of the hacker tribe, right? But unfortunately, Hal has another side. He makes rude and disparaging comments about his coworkers. If he doesn't like a project, he'll let it slide.

Anybody else out there who could swear this woman knows them?

  3. Re:Galaxy Class Starships on Voyager Eulogy · · Score: 1

The Galaxy, Yamato, and Enterprise were the first Galaxy class starships and were constructed at roughly the same time. However, a number of Galaxy class starships have been built since then.

  4. Re:MD5Sum on AOL vs. Open Source AIM Clones · · Score: 1

Assuming the AIM server can request a 128 bit MD5 digest from any byte offset within a 1MB executable (in reality, not all of the executable will be usable; since AIM is reading the in-memory image, any regions with dynamic fixups applied will be unsuitable), storing all the possible MD5 digests would require 16MB. That's a fair chunk of data.

  5. Vangelis 'Blade Runner' allusion? on Spielberg (And Kubrick)'s A.I. · · Score: 1

Did anyone else think the music in the trailer was vaguely reminiscent of the Blade Runner theme?

  6. Re:And the world record is... on What's The World Record For Maximum Simultaneous Connections? · · Score: 1

Further, you do not need a unique port per TCP socket. A TCP connection is uniquely identified by the (source IP, source port, destination IP, destination port) 4-tuple.

  7. Excerpt from United States Code on What Does the Audio Home Recording Act Really Allow? · · Score: 1
From United States Code, Title 17, Chapter 10, Subchapter D, Section 1008 (aka http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/1008.html):
No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the manufacture, importation, or distribution of a digital audio recording device, a digital audio recording medium, an analog recording device, or an analog recording medium, or based on the noncommercial use by a consumer of such a device or medium for making digital musical recordings or analog musical recordings.
This seems to indicate that this particular piece of copyright legislation - Title 17, United States Code - cannot be used to prosecute those that facilitate copying music (countless Internet/mp3-based examples spring to mind) nor can it be used to prosecute noncommercial duplication of music.
