Timing is interesting..... they've been trialling the thing in secret for months, then 4 months before the big rollout they use the stuff to help track the car....
I'm not saying there's a link, just noting the timing of the events is very 'interesting'
This story broke a few days after Pc Beshenivsky was shot and killed in Bradford W Yorkshire, and the police claimed to use new technology to track the get away car. This was the new technology that just happened to be on trial in Bradford and certain areas in London.....
Is it just me or does this story breaking, no one previously knowing about this (privacy issues abound) and all of a sudden it's used to break a major crime seem like a nice coincidence????
Can do *nix, MacOS X (via hfstar), Windows (via smb shares).
Also can backup to disks (via virtual tapes) or traditional tape drives.
Used it at work for over 4 years with no problems, even old SunOS 4 hosts are still OK.
An alternative is Bacula, but you an RDBMS (mysql or postgress I think) to store the indexes whereas amanda uses files. Also I think bacula uses it's own backup client whereas amanda is merely a front to dump(), tar() etc so it's more platform/filesystem idependant.
Don't forget to test restores every so often etc etc !
Don't use WEP, its very broken. Can be cracked in under 2 minutes, so don't bother. Its worse then having no security 'cos you think you have a secure connection when in actuallity you don't.
Find out what the risks are and create an AUP (acceptable use policy) around the risks.
Get the users to sign the AUP.
put controls around the AUP - eg make sure the users can't install their own software and do this for then with LanDesk or similar. No use of IE, Firewall only etc etc..
so you admin an email server. How big's the darn thing if it takes 1 person 100% + time to do this????
If they expect you respond 24/7 then you'll need 24/7 cover on the hardware too. You'll need the over time should the thing break and SLA's to work to.
Why is email in use 24x7 - you work for a global co??? what's the SLA's on the network, the internet connection....
accessing a server you'll need to get at the console too so you'll need a console server from Cyclades/Perle/....
The 'shiney gadget' you need is the least of the problems IMHO.
could always give you a compnay car - best when remote admin-ing a windows box anyway;-)
Another vote for these. The UK gas engineers (that's natural gas not gasoline) use them, so they get moved about alot, in dirty environments (boiler rooms etc) and they survive that fine..
Ok so where exactly did Steve Jobs say it would be a PC inside. He said Intel CPU's. Now given they are taking over a year to redesign the insides from PPC CPU to Intel CPU I doubt it'll be stock PC hardware in there.
Also Apple is at heart a hardware company. If they start using off the shelf PC type architecture why buy a Mac when all you need is the O/S?
I reckon it'll be Intel CPU's, but still speciallised hardware so you still have to buy hardware from Apple.
Instead of pussy footing around with stuff like... we'll make a decission when the digital uptake has reached 80%.
Come on UK govm't (or whatever the quango is thats runnning this). make a descission and force all the manufacturers to comply...you're quick enough to try and force ID cards on us...
Users can still us Windows, we just make sure the default browser is Firefox, make IE difficult to find (remove from Desktop etc) and we don't habve the issues again.
You don't have to replace the entire hardware, just the browser with the silly idea of automatigically installing stuff.

Coincidence????
hmm I get your point. I think I'll add in $SUBJ into the comment when I do this again.
Ta for the suggestion
you wouldn't give the me the job.
This then gives you the opporunity to address any problems they might see with your application and have no excuses for not hiring you...
I normally find the problem is located between a chair and a keyboard......
;-)
and sometimes it's my chair and keyboard.. odd that

Not cheap, but good...can OCR and match/highlight the search terms in the scanned document.
Official site shows phased switch off starting 2008.
One isolated village in Wales has already done this as test (they got their Set Top Boxes free).
Most areas can already get Digital TV in one form or another (Satellite or terestial).
Get the facts right please.

Being a precursor to XML is prior art. I wonder how the patents handle that, or mention it at all.
He was at Uni - same course. Always a clever chap, nice one col..

WPA is fine is you use a strong shared key.
If the AUP is written correctly, getting "around it" is a dicisplinary offence...

Better hassle your Congressman/Senator to put decent Data Proctection Laws into the statute books then.
Bruce Schnier (amongst others) sees this as THE major problem with USA computer security right now...

maybe, but iTunes only works with an iPod. So you are locked in of you want to use iTunes.

change cards to someone.
Vote with you feet. If they don't provice a decent service move.
Also you say what country you're from so we can't give any legal advice.
At work we find the problem is Internet Explorer.

Given the fact NON of the current PPC applications would run on the Intel P4 without a nasty emulation layer I doubt they'll be moving.
What's more likely is the use if the Xscale (ARM based) processors for the iPod based stuff - phone/player combo etc.
buy a laptop....iBook....
???????
