Oh great,
Just because the US has them, we have to get them as well, despite the very vocal criticism there has been....what a bunch of blind and deaf sheep we have as eurocrats!
Speaking from experience,I disagree!
We have been on many long car trips (as in between 8 and 16hrs) with our daughter who is now 5.
Before she could speak she would just sit and stare wide-eyed at the countryside flashing past, now we talk, sing, take-turns drawing on an etch-a-sketch type board, play guessing games, read , etc...
She has also learnt to spend time occupying herself, and has also learnt that at certain times she just needs to shut up and sit still because daddy is concentrating on traffic and finding the way.
OK, it probably varies from kid to kid, but don't say it's impossible!
Why is everything measured on getting people up into space?
The Mars missions have accomplished a lot more scientifically with less budget and it all gets ignored - What about the Voyager deep space probes etc.....?
Getting people up there does have a certain "wow" factor, but I would say managing to remote control probes/vehicles over millions of km is much more impressive and efficient.
People need so many support systems that swallow up useful payload, and don't really end up doing more than a machine could, it's just a waste
I agree.
My daughter started asking for "Princess Lillyfee" stuff after visiting her friend, but my solution was to suggest we try making the things ourselves.
Result: she was delighted, we spent a few days making things out of cardboard ( bicycle helmet, horse saddle, luge, skis....), which she could paint, and she proudly showed every visitor the toys she had made for the next few months.
She's over the "Lillyfee" phase now, and we can just chuck the cardboard stuff without any worries or financial loss, but she has learnt to make things herself.
Swiper: posting A/C as I forgot to log in!
I don't mind you saying my english is crap, yours is no better, but I'm not an American, I'm a South-African (I never said I'm learning English, it's my mothertongue).
I'm simply stating what my personal experience with Vista is/has been, and yes, I do have SP1 installed but I still have the impression any network handlings are damn slow. If you don't believe me then you're welcome to come and see for yourself, although given your manners I wouldn't actually let you into my house...
Thank goodness they introduced that wireless thingammybob. Before that we would rotate clockwise one day and anti-clockwise the next. That made a real mess of the databases
I absolutely agree.
At first I thought "hmm, looks nice, not bad"
Then I noticed how slow it was copying stuff over the network and downloading files over the web, not happy.
Then I saw how obfuscated the way to any settings has become. Second not happy.
Yesterday I rearranged the startup menu: For every single operation I did it asked me twice if I really wanted to......aaaargghh
Then my wife looked at it (she doesn't get on well with computers, but could use the previous laptop(XP and Ubuntu), thought a while and said "I don't like it":-)
Today I try ubuntu on it.
(Why of why does a basic Vista install with a few programs use up 40GB ????!!!???!!??!)
No, that's not a mistake, just an all too common added on european "feature" (yep, not just limited to the UK)
Unfortunately, importing from the US isn't really an option unless you enjoy suprises from customs, who pick their rates using the score of the currently ongoing darts game

Which gets me quite worried being in the Federal Republic of Germany, and having had the same train of thoughts myself...
