M. Sipser's book is great tool to understand state machines. Check out Knuth's Art of Programming, if you want to really hit the ground running. BTW, this reply reminds me of an intro. professor who was glad that Hoare named his sorting algorithm quicksort instead of Hoare-Sort, I couldn't stop laughing. At the time, I didn't know CS professors had a sense of humor.
