Nope you are wrong on that one. The market right now is a bit dicy. And with things like this happening it could seriously cause the stock market to drop.

Remember MS has the highest stock valuation in the world.

The article stated that Microsoft bought Visio as part of their Internet strategy. Huh? Sometimes I wish those reporters would spend a little bit of time to understand what they are writing.

Ok, here is my take. Microsoft bought Visio for its leverage into the graphics market. Corel is a sore spot for Microsoft. They want to keep Corel on life support so that there appears to be competition. But with Visio Microsoft is building a proper graphics package. Look at what Office is today.

It means that for Sun to compete, it must include other features as well. This is going to be tough for them.

The metric system is one scale yes, but at least I can do math with it. With a system based on miles, yards, feet, etc math is that much more complicated...

The US has many great things, but on this one they screwed up!!

I wonder how much Compaq is still with Microsoft. Sure they still work together, but I think their relationship is strained. This started to happened when Compaq bought Digital and became REALLY large. Of course it does not help that Digital has quite a bit of software.

But I think this attempt by Compaq is sincere. Why do I come to this conclusion? Simple which hardware vendor has been doing demos with Microsoft. It used to be Compaq. Not anymore. It is DELL.

    WHERE DOES JAVA WORK?

JG: It works great on SPARC

Oh, I forget you work for Sun right?

Now back to reality. I could believe Java has problems with either Windows or Linux, but not both at the same time. If this is the case, then it is not the platform, but Java!!!

I have never been an employee. Been a contractor from day 1. So how have I done? Sometimes I was a hero and other times an asshole! That is the reality.

When you have a company, it does not matter if you use contractors or employees. The company has to be properly managed. That is what makes the difference. Contractors or employees will not save the day.

Microsoft likes to pride itself on the quality people. So why the problematic software? Simple answer, and this was from one of those high quality people. Management does not want to see it. We need to ship product. For those products that are well done, management cared about the product.

However, attracting people can be difficult. Employees may stay longer and contractors and become employees. What you need to do is find the right people from either pool and then attract them using the color of money and work environment. Remember one thing. Often I will take a rate cut so that I can work on the REALLY COOL stuff. I look at it as an investment for the future.

I agree with your post. But the problem is that people do not accept other point of views. When I lived in North Carolina, I went to a private school. It was religious. The people were very nice, decent folks and everything was ok. But it was very apparent that anything not part of religion was discarded.

An example was that I wanted to do a paper on pre-historic man. I was not allowed because it did not jive with the bible.

My point is that in many respects religion is good, but the moment it is applied to humanity things become funny.

  14. This guy is a boob on Fred Moody on the Solow Paradox, MS · · Score: 1

This is a real boob. He needs to re-think economics and how the new economy works...

Let me tell you about about engineering. Engineering is a discipline that has boosted capabilities enormously. But it is not the productivity that the economists figure in. For example when my father studied mechanical engineering he studied the exact same courses as I did. The same functions, methods, etc. However, he used a slide rule and I used a modern scientific HP calculator. His exams were the same length and had the same number of questions.

The question that needs to be asked is if there is no difference in engineering education in a time span of 30 years what did the computer do?

The computer enhanced productivity in that I can tackle the same number of problems, but with greater complexity. In the times of my father he may have used a much coarser rounding. I with the help of the computer have the ability to pinpoint the number.

That is what the computer brought. It does not make me more productive. The computer gives me the ability to handle more complex problems and richer solutions. Is this turning more profit? Absolutely not.

Think about it. When my dad developed products the concept of a car warrenty was non-existant. Now with the computer there is five to eight year warrenty. Again no traditional "productivity" boost. But a dramatic quality boost, which to me is part of productivity

But I guess saying that Microsoft is responsible for this evil is so much easier...
    What a boob...
