from what I have read, the japanese were about ready to surrender BEFORE we smoked a couple of their cities. this due to the fact that the leapfrogging of american forces to the isles of japan wer getting to the point where japan knew it was going to lose. the whole reason why the nuclear weapons were used was to flex our industrial might and get not just a surrender, but an UNCONDITIONAL surrender.

why not just provide the students with a desktop unti both at the school and at the home with a larger than floppy witable medi in both of them and then hav the students bring their data woth them. I for one think that it would be more cost effective in the long run to provide for 2 desktop machines of reasonable power and zipdisks than to provide 1 laptop and replace it every 3 months due to excessive wear and theft. because in the neighborhood where I grew up , it wouldn't matter if your laptop had big bird on the case, it would get yanked out of your hands in the space between heartbeats and then see a good old can of arylic spray paint to cover up good old sesame street before it hit the market. desktop machines would not be as accessable to sticky fingers and repair/upgrade is just a touch easier on destop systems than a laptop.

yeah (begin flamebait) because I can get win98 on it and put it in my car with a paralell cdrom and a USB cdrom for MP# playing and delorme streets navigator using my usb GPS reciever. (end flamebait) linux is real nice and all, but I like winamp, and I really like my car, so why not get winamp in my car. I know I could use x11amp and OSS, but I already have a good mp3 linux box for my house, I want GPS in my car, and windows can do that, if it crashes on me after being up for 2 hours, BFD, I am probably done with my trip anyway and was turning off the car/PC anyway. all I need now is a good way to get the system to recognize shutdown of the car so I don't hose my filesystem or drain my car battery. hrmm.... maybe look into a nice sleep system.

    3) A HW controller doesn't magically make all your disks hot swappable. Often people are happy just their system keeps running until some time where they can conveniently take it down and replace failed disks. I'm happy with that :) obviously you haven't been to the the product info page for the fasttrack66 controller, the accessory of fasttrack66 pro add hotswap caddies to the fattrack controller card. so in fact, the hardware controller does "magically" make your disks hot swappable.

as sick as it may be, I believe in everyoine's right to speak freely, whether it is about their love of science, study of serial killers or "racial superiority". through freedom of speech , we as people of the world can communicate who we are and define ourselves ad distict and individual members of our communities instead of faceless, voiceless automatons puling a 9 to 5 grind. if certain people choose to use this power of communication to tell others of how much they hate X group of others, then that is their right as an individual. it is also withing my power to base my opinion of that person based on his/her statements and deal with them accordingly from that point on. so when I now see the babblings of a narrow minded biggot splattered before my eyes or falling upon my ears, I can either ignore it as a passive individual, or excersise my right as an individual and speak out against the slurs of another, informing all of those present of my point of view, which they may see as baseless as the biggot's very own. the point of this is not to protect the right of people to preach their hatred or attempt to persuade others to follow their path, but to allow for all people to excersise the right to communicate freely without the fog of censorship effectively stealing our voices. Let people speak. let people write. if you choke exression in one form, and the message behind it is strong enough, it will simply break free in a different manner. a message of hate that does not die, will build within the minds of the censored and likey release itself in a much more violent manner than words on a page, or men on a new york street corner preaching about evil to any passerby. also, when we allow others to spew out their messages of narrow minded bigotry to the world, they clearly identify themselves to those who do not share those views and let their words and statements paint themselves as wells of hatred not to be ignored, pitied or forgotten, but watched. *forrest gump voice* and that's all I have to say about that *end forrest gump voice*
