Getting into orbit is cheaper than getting to the moon and back, and solar power has been tried and tested for power in space. The idea of transmitting it to earth has been suggested for years. Its currently a lot more tangible than the whole process of developing fusion power to be workable, and getting a new breed of lunar heavy lifters out there.
Ummm... I didn't go to "High School". But thats just pedantic. Are computers needed for design, art, architecture or business processing? Of course not. They're not even needed for spreadsheets. And unless you have a lot of data they're not needed for plotting data. Using paper gives more of a feel for the sort of accuracy and the typical values.
Gosh, that was highly negative of me wasn't it. Actually, it seems that your school was one of the rare cases where computers are used sensibly. Not all schools have a teacher who isn't scared of the things (Yes, I really mean scared. Any more terrified and they'd be leaping back after pressing a key). Sensible use of computers in schools is not a bad idea. Its just hard to find
You represent a minority. You found that you have a talent for coding. One of the few truly creative things that you can only do on a computer. Most people are as likely to write a program as they are an opera.
Learning to use a computer doesn't take long. It certainly isn't something that needs to be taught at age 5. They do have their disadvantages though. A computer is essentially designed to think for you - an oversimplification I know, but I mean that you don't need to learn to spell. A computer can do that for you. You don't need to knw how to write. You don't need to know how to format a letter. You don't need to know how to count.
My mental arithmatic improved tremendously when I stopped using a calculator. My ability to walk long distances improved when I stopped using a car. A computer makes finding things out too easy. It stops people from working things out for themselves.
This doesn't mean I'm a luddite. Computers are useful. The same can be said about cars and calculators. There's no way I'm going to try and work out the square root of 37.6 in my head. Nor am I going to walk 50 miles. Just don't think that they are always a goiod idea.
Since we're on the subject, I can believe that most modern software is eventually derived from gcc. A lot of CPU manufacturers will generally just port gcc (For obvious reasons). As a result, most operating systems are descended from gcc. Therefore, programs were compiled either by gcc, by a compiler compiled by gcc, or by a compiler running in an OS compiled using gcc, or descendants therof.
Therefore, by this argument, all software is GPL'ed. Shame that the GPL DOESN'T apply to prgrams compiled using it.
if you writen arseware v1.0 and release it under the GPL, then completely re-write all the code for arseware v2.0 even if it looks pretty much exactly the same and does a lot of things the same way it doesn't have to be GPLd.
Well, if you write it, then you can release arseware v1.0 under a proprietry licence. But yeah. There is no reason you couldn't write a closed source clone of gcc, or Linux as long as you were to make sure that you didn't copy any of the code. A clean room implementation would be the safest way of doing this.
When you download a file from someone else's computer with Napster, there is no expectation that you will return the favor and upload something back.
I disagree with this part. While there is no mechanism to prevent you from just taking songs, there is an implicit agreement that you are making your songs available. Most users consider it unfair and pointless to just take.
I don't know if you could argue that the region coding is preventing competition since this is not preventing US competition, except perhaps by importers. Nevertheless, the copyright laws (At least I assume that the DMCA counts as a copyright law) are being used by the industry right now to stifle competition from the Open Source community.
I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and Gentlemen this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookie from the planet Kashyyyk, but Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it, that does not make sense. Why would a wookie, an eight foot tall wookie, want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more importantly you have to ask yourself, what does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and Gentlemen it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me, I'm a lawyer, defending a major internet corporation, and I'm talking about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and Gentlemen, I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense. And so you have to remember when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the emancipation proclomation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit.
Imagine where the computer world would be, were gates not holding us back.
Exactly the same place, except Apple would have the monopoly (Since if they had control over use of the WIMP system, they would be able to push all competition out of the market), except we still wouldn't have a multitasking OS with GUI.
Of course, since everyone only listens to music using windows or Macs, the software to handle digital music wil only be available for these systems.
A Sicilian hacker (about time Sicily got into tech news after all) will find a quick and easy way to circumvent this system, and release GPL'ed software that can conceivably be used to pirate the music.
The GPL'ed program will be posted on 2600. The RIAA will immediately start a court case against them. This will go on for a very long time, during which time we will find out that the only people in the entire case who has any idea what the actual software does are the 2600 staff (Their legal team will not have a clue).
Since this will result in a lot of news for Slashdot, I suggest Andover lobby for its introduction into the music industry immediately.
Didn't you ever watch that move with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy?
Spookily enough... Yup saw it on Friday. (Wargames). Fair enough. I guess I can believe that there's still a modem somewhere buried in NASA's huge computer network. Although I'd also expect it to be 1200 bps tops.
Wouldn't making sure the network was totally isolated from all other networks prevent this sort of thing from happening? I just don't see how this was possible in the forst place.
In fact, the A500/A500+ was probably the only Amiga _without_ an easy interface for a hard drive (although I wasn't around for the A1000).
Same Zorro I connector but upside down and on the other side apparently. And its not really a bad hard disk interface, its just that you need a SCSI or IDE controller, which pushes up the cost of the disk drives.

why the hell am I replying to this bullshit post anyhow?
Probably because you see inherent benefit to others in helping with experiments that result purely in a greater understanding of the physical sciences, thus encouraging people to study these phenonema full time, and help develop a greater understanding of the universe.
Wouldn't worry too much about the minerals and stuff. Mostly gonna be things like Calcium carbonate, which has always been present in hard water.
Anyway, my suggestion would be add salt (And keep ventolated. Chlorine gas will come off the other electrode. Nasty stuff)
A model railway or a scalextric controller is pretty good for getting a decent whack of fairly safe DC power. Worked for me anyway. As long as you only want small quantities. This will fill a test tube quite quickly.
When your corn crop is ready to harvest, get the beam moved over and viola - instant popcorn.
The EU would be chuffed about this one. Rather than a grain mountain, they have an even more bulky popcorn mountain.

I await the inevitable Sim City 2000 jokes.

Both. My fault. I should have added a smiley or something.

(Yes, I know I stole this joke)
Wouldn't you prefer a good game of chess?

Utter rubbish. I never look at them. I do feel an urge to rush out and buy SuSE 6.4 for some reason though.

if a cracker really screwed something up and the astronaut died as a result, is it murder? Manslaughter?
My guess would be murder. Especially if he knew that what he was doing was interfering with the shuttle.

The Elate project has been a very secret project for half a decade.
Was it? The website was around 5 years ago, explaining what it did in quite a detailed way, and what platfroms it was available for.
Its just sleeping
Apart from the fact that they hired an Amigan to design DirectX.
I take it this was the Amiga community's revenge for Amiga Basic.
